USB modems and USB controllers

I am thinking about getting a USB modem for my new computer that is running
Windows XP Home Edition.  I also have a USB Logitech Momo (the original
one).  I read in the past that there could be online racing problems with
this configuration.  Is that true?  What are people's experience with this
or similar configurations?

Thanks,

Dave Ewing

If you plan on using USB controllers I would stay away fro ma USB modem.
Since they are all on the same channel the yare all competing with
resources.  If it's dialup go with an external serial port modem, if its
broadband get a NIC based modem.
The less items you have on USB the less problems you potentially will have.

My USB Thrustmaster would go into a hard left turn and stay there
when trying to use it online with a USB modem. It was fine offline.

I had horrible online frame rate problems with a USB modem and USB
controllers.I had to switch to an internal modem.

have.

I think it's on Alison Hine's site where it discusses using a Serial->USB
converter because serial ports bog down the CPU too much.  I'd assume that
it's a non-issue though if you're running a 1.5GHz+ machine - even if
running a non-dedicated server...

I've been using an external USB modem and various USB controllers(Logitech
Extreme 3D, LWFF and Momo Force) for about 3 years with no trouble on or off
line.

USB modems and USB controllers

Thanks for responding.

I have six USB ports.  Two came pre-wired on my motherboard and I also
hooked up another set of two myself (six total).  When I look at Device
Manager, it shows three separate entries for "USB Root Hub", although they
all show "Location 0".  There are also two entries for "Standard OpenHCd USB
Host Controller" as well as Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller".

Do all the USB ports share resources equally? Or is it like the different
IDE channels?  Is it possible that if you plugged the modem into one pair
and the USB game device into another set that they wouldn't contend for the
same resources?

Thanks,

Dave Ewing

Thanks for another data point, Don.  Did you see my follow-up question up
above (about different USB Host Controllers / Root Hubs).  Is that possible
reason why some have trouble and some don't?

Thanks,

Dave Ewing
