USB controller problem - pauses

by Stephen Ferguso » Fri, 05 Oct 2001 16:01:42

Hi all,

Can anyone think of a reason why my computer would stop reading my USB
joystick for a few seconds?  I run "End It All" to get rid of all background
apps, but every so often in the middle of a game, the computer seems to stop
reading the controller for a while.  It's really irritating to be coming out
of a long drift in RallyMasters and to have the steering stay on full lock
for an extra 2 seconds, or to have the throttle wide open and the steering
straight ahead going into the Parabolica.

grrrrr...

Have exactly the same problem, never found a good solution. If I use a
gameport joystick, it never happens.

I am using Win98SE + DX7.0a.

At the second crossroad after start on SS5 u should have turned
left...Milano 233 km - Monza 214 km...:) and Parabolica is there in
south-end of the park...:)

BTW... do u have any graphic "stuttering"? If u have it _could_ be the
MS-wheel...I had some "stuttering" before I changed to the LWFF (old
type- all red..:))

No, my impending doom plays out with a silky-smooth framerate.  It's a
non-FF joystick, not a FF wheel, so it shouldn't be loading up the CPU.
I'll see about catching the crossroad next time I play...

is it perhaps a via-based socket-a mainboard?

then you should apply the latest 4-in-1 drivers and the
usb-filter from the via website.

next step would be disable error-correction for your usb
ports.

at last you should enter the bios and disable PCI-master read
caching and delayed transaction.

I read today at www.usbman.com that there is some confusion as to that
filter. If you are running Win98 you don't need it. I had a problem
with my VIA USB controller detecting three gamepads as unknown devices
and after many hours of research the solution was to get myself an add
on PCI USB host controller. That fixed my problem. VIA usb controllers
are shit.

p.s. where is this error correction option to be found? I don't see it
under device manager when I select properties for the usb devices.

There are "known" problems with USB and Win98SE.  But MS won't make any
public comment about it.  If you have a TM NASCAR Pro Digital-2 wheel
and pedals....and you go (since about 10 days ago) to the Windows Update
page....you'll see un "Recommended" a patch to fix the USB problem.  You
can bet the problem exists with other controllers.  It has nothing to do
with TM's product.....they just "called MS on the carpet" and they did
something about it.

Start searching the MSKB for a fix.  And, VIA's USB controllers work
just fine.....

Like hell they do. Just go here http://www.racesimcentral.net/
real low down to find out just how ***they are. I thought they were
good too until I tried to install a USB gamepad - make that three
*different* gamepads. All detected as unknown devices on the VIA USB
controller.

I have the exact same problem, and it only occurs on my Win98se machine.
It doesn't matter which J-Stick I use if its USB I get these pauses and
it happens in all games that use a stick.

I haven't been able to find the "FIX" that Tom writes about, if someone
has a link to this "RECOMMENDED PATCH" I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

I'm new (first time on this ng and new to USB controllers) but I just bought
both a Gravis Eliminator Aftershock gamepad and a ThrustMaster Ferrari FF
wheel and Pedals, both using a USB port under Win98se.  I had problems with
both not being 'seen' by the games I tried to use them with.  Gravis tech
support told me to set the Gravis as controller ID #1 in Control Panel >
*** Options > ID Tab, and this works.  With the ThrustMaster Wheel I have
to unplug the Gravis from the other USB port so that the TM is the ONLY
controller, and this allowed using it in GP3.  Hope this is of some help.

it's the checkbox on the lower left corner of the usb-hub. That's W2k,
i don't know if it exists in w98.

but more important is the bios stuff.

No, it doesn't exist in Win98 as far as I can see.

My problem was VIA's ***hardware and nothing else. The person who
said there are no problems with VIA's USB hardware is wrong. Sometimes
you have to be using specific harddware for a problem to show up, just
because it works on one persons hardware doens't mean there are no
problems with the hardware.

By the way, the "error correction" option solved my problems.  thanks
