I have seen a few NASCAR races on tv, and have also seen a couple of
cars live over here (the #88 car, and Allisons old #22 in a
hillclimb!!)and I think the in-car sound in the game does not justify
the car. Would it be possible to add a bit of gearbox/diff-whine? I`d
just love to have the gears screamin` at me....

if you give me the recorded sound, I will gladly make it for you guys. I
do know how to edit n2 wav files. I've done it.

This would be a major improvement! Has anyone posted a patch with a new
engine sound? Might be a good project for our patron saints out here! If
you got a wave of an engine at any given RPM will it modulate with the
throttle? What would be the ideal RPM?....

Try www.pitroad.com.  I believe they have it.  If not, try
www.theuspits.com.
Good luck!

I looked at both those places and couldn't find any new engine sounds.
Anyone else know where to find them?

I don't think anyone has made a new engine sound.

How about the engine noise from those PacWest Super Touring Car Dodge
Stratus? Would that work?

Back during the Coca Cola 600, Papyrus was in town doing an N2 promotion
(Nice job, they did, too). Lots of fun, and I can go into more detail if
anyone is interested.

Point I wanted to mention was that I got the opportunity to talk to Dan
(sorry I'm forgetting the last name, and I don't have my manual in front
of me to check) from Papy about the game in general. Since he did all of
the sounds in the game, I brought up the topic with him of replacing the
sounds ala the SoundKit for ICR2.

The game uses two sounds for the engine, presumably to eliminate that
annoying scratch-pop at high RPM from N1. So, to fully replace the
engine sound, you'll have to find which >>two<< files to replace in the
sound.dat file.

I'll poke around in it some this weekend and post anything I find.

Regards,

There are indeed two files, enghi.wav and englo.wav.  I assume these are
variablly mixed giving the effect of the differnet sounds at different
RPM's.

I am sure that the EngHi.wav file is running all the time, but
as you press the gas the pedal the Englo.wav is mixed in to
give more of a exhaust crack under greater throttle.

There is a separate  file for the AI engine sound called
E1C11.WAV I think it is.

This is a "hard" problem, getting a sample that both sounds good when
pitch-shifted and doesn't have an audible loop point. One of Papy's very
talented engineers spent the better part of several weeks getting the
sound to loop smoothly. FWIW, Sound Forge was the tool of choice, but
just as merely buying a paint brush (or Photoshop) doesn't make one into
Picasso, buying Sound Forge probably isn't enough to get good results
the first time out...
