When loading GP2, should I run s3spdup with an S3 Virge card (Diamond
Stealth 3D 2000)? Or does this utility do absolutely nothing to help.

Run it! I use the same video board and it gives me about 5 - 10
percent CPU occupancy.

You can try it, but it didn't make a difference with my Stealth VRAM.

I have seen GP2 running with just about every video card on the market
and let me tell you that S3 video cards run it as quickly as anything else
I have seen. GP2 doesn't need anything beyond a cheap video card.
It's your CPU that limits the game framerate. Matrox Millenium
has no advantage over either the S3 Trio V64+ or the Virge for GP2
BELIEVE ME I have seen it all.
I hope to have saved you some wasted time
