Changing Viper Racing Sounds

Does anyone know what format sound files should be to use with Viper
Racing.  I'm trying to replace the spotter sounds with those from N2.
I've found that 8 bit, 44 Hz, mono works, but the sound quality is
terrible.  Thanx.
