F1 2002 stutters

by Jimste » Fri, 13 Sep 2002 17:04:04

I recently bought a new system : AMD 2200, 512 Mb Ram, WinXp with my old
Geforce 2 GTS 64MB (Waiting for prices to drop on the 4600 / 9700 cards), my
old one was a 1,2 Ghz, 256 MB, XP system

Yesterday I tried to fire up the f1 2002 game again and everything seemed as
before. But  when I entered the track I get some sort of graphic stuttering,
Looks like every xxx frames it skips one forward of backward. It is

I tought it might be like a Vsync problem, so I tried to look up the
settings in my control panel, because in the graphic setup screen of the
game it is turned off. I could not find those settings in the Direct3D
setting, I could find them in the openGL settings but changing that didn't
help a thing....

Anyone with a suggestion where to look for a solution ?

TIA,

Jimmy

Other people - myself included - have this problem from time to time.
Although not satisfactory, I find that a reboot makes it go away.  No idea
why it happens though.
As far as the vsync setting is concerned, you'll find it under Direct 3D
'More Direct 3D' in the nvidia control panel.

I will check again, but I tought there was only Texel adjustments
possible...(Whatever that may be...)

(I'm at work at the moment)

It's a textured pixel.... a 'texel'

Similarly ( something I'm using at work) a Voxel is a volume pixel - i.e. a
pixel in 3d space - used in the medical field a lot

It won't appear unless you've got the "Coolbits" registry hack.
Nevertheless, you should run the 3Dconfig.exe and make sure that vsync is
disabled in there...

Is is disabled there...
So maybe it is a problem of a different sort ...

You may consider going for the cheaper Ti4200, many can be overclocked close
to 4600 speeds.
Your GeForce 2 card is going to be a real bottleneck in that system.
I am running the Gainward Ti4400 and am very happy with it. I do however get
an occasional stutter in F12002, usually when one of the ai is entering the
pits.

Yep, I know. But so far it was going still fairly well.
Those Radeon 9700 are so tempting (hey I want to get an advance to be sure
to use the card for at least 2 years), but they are still so expensive. :-(.
I not quiet satisfied with the visual quality of my geforce..So no Nvidia
for me anymore...although like you said those 4200 are very tempting...

On my previous system I had no problem at all with this card.
The stuttering is like every second in the game, it is a very repetitive
thing. Not only when the AI enter pits or something...
Maybe I should try to reduce resolution to reduce the task of the Geforce a
bit ...

What a coincidence. Not only have I had the same problem with stuttering,
but only yesterday did I contact EA support and send them my DXDiag. If it
is any help (although I realise it is all down to how each of us have
configured our computers) this is the answer I received back.

"It looks as though you need to update the drivers for either your sound
card or motherboard..........The sound card driver is simply a vxd which is
unlikely to be fully DirectX compatible. Also I noticed this little message
in the Dxdiag info "Problems were found in the system registry. Details are
available in the saved text file. You should reinstall DirectX." It may be
worth re-installing DirectX 8.1 or you can fully remove the Nvidia driver.
You will be asked to restart the PC. When prompted to install a driver
select the "Standard VGA driver" and enter Windows. Now re-install the new
Nvidia driver".

Now if only I knew what "sound card driver is simply a vxd which is unlikely
to be fully DirectX compatible" meant!

Any help?

The vsync is under the Texel adjustments - on mine anyway.

Do you have any anti-virus software running in the background?  I have
the problem but it seems to go away if I disable Norton Anti-Virus.

Went back home last night to follow EA's advice on how to resolve the
stuttering issue (see post above), but to no avail; reinstalling Sonic Fury
sound card driver (latest), and DX made no difference. Even playing with the
different levels of hardware acceleration, and using Cacheman didn't help.
Pity, because the pit crew sounds really make this sim immersive. Looks as
if I close to loosing this battle, and I hate being beaten!!!!!!

When your game stutters - do you see the hard driver light come on? If so -
try a lower texture detail size/lower res.
I found F1 2002 on my geforce 2 played well with 800 x 600 and 2x
antialising and mine is a Pent 2 450 !

I remember reading that some game problems can be solved by turning off
sound hardware acceleration - run dxdiag and there is an option in the sound
tab. Move the slider all the way to the left (no accel) - and try your game.

Good luck!

Second Ians proposal, kwow that effect myself.
But I also came across another issue. Did cost me 6 months in hell:
When the FPS exceed the monitor refresh rate for the chosen resolution, the
picture starts stuttering on my Samsung 753.
Seems to be a timing problem. Vsync is not applyable, then stutter gets
horrible.
So, also try to crank up details to artificially lower the FPS. Choosing another
resolution might help too.
I found 11xx x 9xx (something like that) very suitable for my rig (GF2 GTS 64
DDR with XP 1500 and WinME)
