BTW, what no one at ESPN wants to say publicly is that they were outbid
at the last minute by, of all entities, FoxSports. Even though there are
many Fox affiliates around the US, they don't all carry FoxSports, and
local affiliates have a much freer hand in deciding what to run and what
not to run... I've already heard wildly varying times for the Oz F1
rebroadcast. That's right -- REbroadcast. ONLY SpeedVision will have
live qualifying AND race coverage -- and that's for EVERY race on the
calendar...

ESPN keeps mumbling about the lost coverage being "at least for the
first GP", but that's horse hockey -- FoxSports got the rebroadcast
rights, and SpeedVision has ALL the live rights for the US, period. In
fact, I just finished watching Qualifying on SpeedVision, and Hobbs and
Posey were already crowing about SpeedVisions coup -- as well they
might.

The problem is that only about 10 people in the entire US *get* SpeedVision!
This is a big blow to ESPN, F1 and all racing fans.

Well those of us who don't even get ESPN2 made the transistion 2 years
ago to DSS and haven't looked back so quit your crying. ESPN gave it
up IMHO 2 years ago when they reduced coverage to the deuce. Far
smaller market and I think F1 told them to stuff it.  ESPN can stick
with the Nascar joke...

Buy yourself a DSS or Primestar and drop the cable. Costs have really
dropped since I got mine 2 years ago and it is far superior in
quality, variety, etc.  Besides, you get to hear Sam Posey .... :-)

Unfortunately, this really isn't a viable option for the many millions of
people, like me, that live in an apartment.

Not Really, I know several people that have a DSS in their
apartment. As long as you have a balcony to put your dish....
There's still hope....

When was qualifying on on speedvision?  I looked everywhere at the
guides, so unless it wasn't listed on the DSS guide or on their web
site, I don't know why I didn't get it.  Its definitely going to be on
live on SV, and is properly scheduled, but I've been watching for
qualifying on it and no luck.

Regarding ESPN, just as well.  I get so sick of their obsession with
NASCAR.  Often my favorite open-wheel events are given poor coverage,
RPM 2Nite is 80% NASCAR and when something has to get shuffled its
always the open-wheeled series that get bumped.

> When was qualifying on on speedvision?

Randy -- It was on last night, from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm Eastern; and a
pretty good hoot it was.

I agree completely about ESPN -- they're laying all the blame on FOCA,
but as much as Ecclestone is the spawn of Satan, it's pretty hard to
accept that ESPN would be so inept as to get outbid at the eleventh hour
by as lame an entity as FoxSports. The strange thing now is that, though
last night Speedvision was claiming they would be the Only live US
broadcast of F1 qualifying AND races this year, today Fox is saying that
they will be tape-delaying qualifying, but showing the races live, as
well. Of course, my local Fox affiliate had the usual Saturday night
fare (Cops, More Cops, America's Most Wanted, News, Simpsons), so I
think whatever FoxSports' coverage is going to be, it's going to vary
wildly all over the country as far as local affiliates are concerned.

My take from all this is that though ESPN has been cut out of the
negotiations, the situation is still somewhat fluid among Fox,
Speedvision, and FOCA.

A weird start to the season, and an equally bizarre race, which
demonstrated either the greatest act of sportsmanship since Peter
Collins turned over his Ferrari to Fangio at Monza, or a total ballsup
on the part of Team McLaren, or possibly both. Can't wait to hear the
postmortems on THIS one!

No ESPN coverage, I can't get Speedvision (it's the old Time Warner vs.
Rupert Murdoch scenario), and even though I have Fox Sports network
available, it seems that in my section of the country, the Fox Sports
affiliate has decided that we don't want to see F1.  This freaking sucks

By FCC regulation, if the condo development does not ban ALL antennas,
you are permitted a dish under 1 meter, and they cannot stop
you... I'm sure one of the DSS companies would be more than happy to
give you more advice and specific citations on this (to get your
business).

Most of the races are in Europe, so the early Sunday morning lineup is
more a concern for the US folks for most races.

Those of you who don't own a DSS dish.  Use this for an excuse to get
one.  You won't regret it.  It gives you more bang for the buck, more
choices and higher quality.  I haven't missed cable one bit in ANY
way.

I put up a dish at our condo.  I find that many of the regulations
that concern dishes were written with the big dishes in mind, not the
mini-dishes.  The rules are there, but they are outdated and can be
challenged for revision.  Its not like a DSS dish is an eyesore like
one of the big uglies.

It is *NOT* the Fox network that is carrying the races. It is the Fox Sports
Network, a cable channel, that will carry the races. Melbourne was broadcast
here by Fox Sports Southwest at 1:00pm EST.

I wonder if they will still be the "winners" of the race after the protest
is decided?
