GPL compatible video cards?

by MrDav » Wed, 21 May 2003 23:31:55

My PC has a Voodoo3 3DFX video card, and as I'm only
really interested in GPL, since I installed the glide patch, thats
been fine for me.

I now want to upgrade to a 21st century card, so I can try Vice
City ( hardly the same I know, but I enjoyed playing it with my cousin at
Christmas on his PS2), but I dont want to buy a card which isnt backwards
compatable with GPL. Any experience with these newfangled Geoforce
cards or similar would be appreciated, thankyou.

Geforce cards work perfect in gpl with either opengl or d3d

There is a D3D patch available.
Says it works with all GF cards.
I have it and it works fine with my GF4 Ti4400.

GPL runs well with the D3D patch on my ATI 9700 Pro and is soooo pretty.
However, the game runs too fast and the exagerated joystick sensitivity
makes the cars undrivable. Geez, they were hard enough to control
before........

Have you applied the CPU fix?

Not yet, does it help a lot? The descriptions don't say, they just say it
fixes "issues" with fast PC's.

Hi again Malc,

Never got around to the patch. I had about 80 games to sort out after my
upgrade and basically just checked to see if it still ran. It did, so it
stayed out of the discard pile, but about 12 others didn't.

Just installed the CPU fix and yes it helps. Gets GPL back to its normal
state of uncontrollability. I would prefer a controller patch to make the
cars less jittery and keep the high graphics speed, makes it more exciting
like the modern racing games instead of the usual deceptive slowness which
lets you think you're going to get around the corner easily, but don't.

GPL is not high on my list of games to play, too much like hard work for
little gain and not much fun. I was mostly interested in playing online but
wasn't making significant progress and got tired of the guys ***ing about
'that warping Fer", thanks to my high ping.

It can stay on my PC awhile longer until I need the space.

Glad you got it working anyway ;-)

There are ways to 'tune' your connection to help reduce warp, and it takes
practice to get the most out of gpl, but it is worth the effort if you're
interested in racing.

Have you tried lfs? http://www.racesimcentral.net/

It's alot of fun, online racing is very good although currently not as well
organised as gpl (5 year head start ;-)) and the cars are relatively easy to
drive.

I tried it with a GF2-MX400 and wasn't too happy with it.  Voodoo
graphics were much more clear and crisp and much more pleasing to the
eye.

Try adjusting the parameters to match the capabilities of your card, especially the LOD slider
setting in a tweaking program like RivaTuner.  Also I highly recommend using the tweaked OpenGL
patch available from RSC forum since you have a GF card.  Of course you happen to be using one of
the absolute rock bottom GF cards still available new as well, which doesnt help.  B4 you rant, I
have one too, so don't think I'm trying to criticize you.  :)

I should have added that I upgraded from a Voodoo card as well, and being able to use all the bigger
textures makes GPL look so much nicer than it ever did on my Voodoo card..
