West Racing update

by Nic » Wed, 22 Oct 2003 23:00:32

Hi,

Just checked out www.west-racing.com to read the new update, and I
can't believe just how many times they can flip from amazing to
moronic.

They come along and announce the racing sim to end all racing sims -
yay!

They disappear for half a year - d'oh!

They come back with a fantastic update showing the work they've done
in the engine design, which I've seen before but not in a game - yay!

They spend a month making a perfectly realistic model of a f***ing bus
- d'oh!

At the end of the day, who cares what the paddock looks like, whether
they have a nice screen font or if you can replace the fan belt on
your crappy team bus when it breaks down. We want legendary racing
cars on legendary race tracks. Give us the 49 at Brands in a rolling
demo and we'll love you, code physically perfect yellow flags
fluttering in the breeze and we'll give up waiting.

Oh wait, I know what they'll be modelling next, the MP4/18...

I'm starting to think that it's all just a Psych 101 experiment.  Someone is
just trying to see the reactions of the *** racing sim fans.  Nobody could
POSSIBLY be stupid enough to think that a fully-modelled race transporter is
what everyone wants...

And nobody could possibly be stupid enough to think that RL is for everyone.
Thus, what everyone wants is unimportant

With the pricing they're aiming for, I don't find it absurd at all to
diligently pay minute attention to the trackside and paddock stuff. AAMOF
I'd expect to see waiters serving beer with fish and chips at lunchbreak on
training days ;-)

Seriously though, it would do their project and its reputation in the sim
community infinitely more good if they'd publish some sort of working,
driveable demo.

On the optimistic side I'd say if their working on the bus then much of
whats important must already be done?  I came away feeling more positive
than Ive been in the past.  They clearly say up till now its all just words
and pics.  Fingers and toes crossed hoping it'll come to pass.

And nobody could possibly be stupid enough to think the Wests have the
midas touch when it comes to race sim design, and honestly believe
that they can do no wrong, when we've yet to see an interactive
product from them.

Come to think of it, am I just incredibly stupid and the Wests are
actually just making a Racing Legends movie? All we have are RL
renders and WSC video clips...

If "much of whats important" had already been done, we would have seen
racing cars, in action, on the track, including in-car models, during a
multiplayer race.

Hope there's a place in the Teddy bear to put our Racing Legends leather
wallet.  Perhaps they will be also modeled in the game?

What makes you say this Frank?  Based on what company do you assume we
"would have seen racing cars on the track"?  Wouldnt that depend on the
sales model?  As LFS is then yes but are the West's using the same sales
strategy?  Theyre pretty small so keeping a tight hold on their code would
be much easier than through a publisher that requires progress demos which
in turn become leaks.  If I was in their shoes I would keep it all as close
to my chest as I could.  When the time is right then let it EXPLODE onto the
scene creating tons of interest and in turn sales???

Actually Im just trying out some positive thinking this time around instead
of my normal pessimistic 'tude :)

True, but I would expect the pricing model to be modular. Purchase car and
track packs, each of which add new features such as garages, working engines
and transporters as the development evolves. To start with I would expect
basic cars and tracks.

I also though they were looking to help fund the venture with a paid up beta
program. Again this would suggest getting something driveable out of the
door as soon as viable.

New Update???...........what a larger mirror for the increase in smoke.
Frankly I cannot believe after two years people still believe they will
produce
somthing..........pathetic. I said it a year ago and I'll say it again, you
will never, ever, by any
stretch of the imagination see any product,..... demo or otherwise from
these guys.
I take that back.I forgot the Teddy Bears and I heard Coffee Cups are in the
making.

Ok, maybe I should have said "what PEOPLE want".  Meaning that nobody in their
right mind would think that's what most people wanted. Is what most people want
unimportant as well?   I still find it hard to believe that anyone would drool
over a fully-modelled race transporter, when we don't even have the cars yet.
Come on, a *transporter*?!?  I would say "who cares?", but it's obvious that at
least you do.  You really seem to always be on the West's bandwagon through
weird press release after weird press release.  While that's admirable(nobody
can accuse you of being a Johnny-come lately), I'm just wondering why?  Your
support of those guys borders on religious faith.  You continue to believe with
all your heart even though there's no real proof that something even exists.
Watching the group reactions though, their church is losing followers...
I'm an atheist - I can't believe in something without seeing evidence.
