GPL/V2 Help?

by William Stut » Wed, 02 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Mannn, I ROYALLY SCREWED UP this time!  I bought a new 450 mhz system a few
months ago and when I installed a Monster 2 card, it worked outstanding.
GPL was awesome with the newest 3dfx drivers.  A few weeks ago, I picked up
BURNOUT PCE and after I installed it, it didn't run in 3dfx mode for some
reason.  Being the type to keep fiddling with my system (read IDIOT here) ,
I managed to***it up so badly that I cannot get any 3dfx games to run on
it.  I'm not even sure which settings I changed on the computer.  I've
removed/reinstalled both games several times, reinstalled WIN98 and the
newest 3dfx drivers from Diamond and now PCE works (and I have no clue as to
how that happened!), but all the rest of the 3dfx sims/games don't.  I dealt
with Diamond tech support and they told me it was a bad board.  I got the
new one yesterday, and still have the same problems

Since everything was fine originally, I now know it's obviously operator
error, but I can't pinpoint it.  Hopefuly someone out there has heard of a
similar situation?  Is this a situation where I need to entirely remove the
3dfx stuff and put it back in (which I thought I've done a few times), or
something more insidious?  I know I haven't given much tech info to give
anyone an idea where to start me checking, but I just figured that MAYBE
someone had a similar problem where they could help me out. The problems
seemed to me to be related to the 3dfx driver update after installing PCE
the first time, because GPL did work after that, but it had those black and
cross hatched areas which I remember the update originally cleared up.
Everything works fine other than 3dfx mode i.e. the software adapter version
of all my 3dfx stuff, etc.

Going into lack of GPL shock and babbling from hitting my head against the
wall,

Bill

Well, this may or may not solve your problem, but at this point it's
probably worth a shot. This procedure has helped me out more than  afew
times in the past...

First, download the latest Voodoo2 drivers from Diamond's website
(www.diamondmm.com). Unzip these into a directory on your hard drive for
use later.

Go into your c:\windows\inf\other directory, and delete the files
pertaining to your Voodoo2 card. The files you're after would have
"3dfx" or "Diamond" in their name. Once that's done, go into the device
manager and highlight the entry for your Voodoo2 card under "Sound,
Video, and Game controllers". Hit the "remove" button.

Reboot, and when Windows redetects the card, reinstall your drivers.
Don't install the beta DX6 drivers from 3DFX, instead, browse to the
directory where you unzipped the drivers earlier. Part way during the
driver installation, you may be prompted for a file location. Point it
back to the same directpory where you unzipped your driver and let the
install continue. Reboot if prompted.

If all that went well, everything should be working.

U could try the latest released yesterday creative labs voodoo2 drivers
which have the previously unreleased finished dx6 drivers and just run
the exe that comes with them it will totally replace everything and
restart without any problems whatsoever (no need to de-install anything)
well at least it did with my 2 Righteous 3d 2's and they worked great
afterwards.
