Warping in N3 online Play

by SSto » Sun, 03 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Hi Guys,

Fired up the new copy of N3 last evening, and tonight, and tried online play
with is.  I'm getting warping to the point that I don't see any other cars on
the track for long periods of time, and some of the cars that are getting shown
on the track, are running the outside grove with the nose into the wall all of
the way around.  Its no fun for me this way, and I'm sure I'm not making
friends with the other online players, it has to be wreaking havoc on them...

Is this warping due to the fact that I'm trying to connect through AOL, is the
connections through them not up to par??  The most frustrating thing, why no
computer to computer modem hook up, even to play against my friends, I have to
use the network??

It looks like back to N99 when I want to multiplay with my buddy, and for solo
play, n3...

That's an understatement.  I'd rather die than take up AOL as my provider.
No offense to you, but AOL stinks.  That's why a lot of people use it:
advertising has fooled them into thinking that one, all this web stuff is
confusing; and two, that somehow AOL will save the users from the nasties of
the world.  Both of these assumptions are false.  But what is true is the
fact that AOL stinks for most everything, including online racing.

I've had my say. :)

Yes... is the answer.  Do NOT use AOL to race.

If you can get Cable Modem in your area you will experience much better online

The problem comes when people with 56k modems try to play these games
multiplayer.  They just don't have enough bandwidth.  These games only
play well on Cable, ISDN, ADSL, etc. Highspeed connections!  When high
speed users log on to one of these hosted games with a low ping,
they're usually populated with slow 56k users that warp all over the
place.

the AOLers that I talk to believe 100% that AOL *IS* the internet! For
some reason I can't convince them that AOL is just one way to get on to
the Internet.  One other thing is when I mention the many search
engines, they swear that AOL is the only place that has search engines.
It's fun to talk to them sometimes just trying to explain what the
Internet is ;-)

Sorry, but I do not agree here.  A well setup DUN, even at 33.6, will
provide good online play.  You will never be able to host 20 clients but for
joining, it can be very good.  Just ask the experts, right Ron ?

But then again, lets not get into another one of those endless thread, PE
LEASE !

I always love these posts about how clients who use analogue modems
can't race on line properly.

Max, you don't have a single clue what you are talking about here.!!

If you had of said for hosting purposes, i would agree with you, but to
say a 56k modem doesn't have enough bandwidth to play a multiplayer
game, is not even worth commenting on...
I guess i better take my 56K modem, which i have capped at 26400 and
never attempt to play another, "warp free", on-line game in GPL or N3
to the USA from Australia...
I feel much better now that i have been educated in on-line ***
issues.
Cheers,
Ron

There are some problems generally, but AoL sucks so badly at just about
everything that I would start there (by finding a real ISP) to cure your
problem.

Marc.

I'm one of those lowly 56k users...since cable isn't offered here yet.  I am
curious about something and maybe someone here can shed some light on it.
When I race on VROC, I must cap my modem at 33.6, turn down the buffers to
low, turn off error control to get a stable connection.
BUT, after much trial and error, I find my connection for N3 online racing
through the WON servers is best when I use my normal web surfing settings. .
. default buffers, error control, normal speed (best so far is 50.6kbps, avg
49.9kbps).  I have streemlined my DUN using PPP-Boost, and use the
recommendes mtu's as set by my ISP.
I enjoy stable connections and latencys, usually in the .08~.13 range, with
good quality.
Any thoughts on this topic.

To the 56k user, it may appear nice and smooth and of course not
notice himself warping, but to the highspeed user (Cable, ISDN, ADSL,
etc), the 56k player will warp like crazy.

Hi Ron, remember me?  Just to support you here, we have a player in our N3
league who connects with a 33.6, and he's rock solid all race.  You are
correct, it comes down to the quality and consistancy of the connection,
not modem speed or latency.  I have seen the light! (But I'm keeping my
cable modem)

Wrong!  I've been hosting several races every night using a cable modem.
Have met tons of good racers with excellent connections and most are on 56k
modems, many set to 33.6k to make it more solid.  I've seen cable modem
users warping just as bad as any 56k user.  Even had a -->few<-- using the
dreaded AOL ISP with out any problems, and a guy in Australia with a perfect
56k connect.

So, where are you getting this MaX??

LOL,   hi Doug,
Good to hear from you...
I have just joined a USA based N3 league too, with my 56k modem capped
to 26400 and so far i have had excellent and warp free connections to
USA from Australia in N3 with my poor little analogue modem.   :))
(my average pings through Won are .300 to .400 )
I just wish i could also get a cable, as it would be good to be able to
do some hosting as well.!!!
You won't get any argument out of me on that issue Doug.  <G>
It would be good to be able to host races etc..   but unfotunately,
living in the dark ages down here in Australia, that is just wishfull
thinking at this stage..
Cheers,
Ron

Hey Doug, Geoff here.

Our "boys" tell me that my connect seem solid as well.  With a 33.6
modem that is.   So unless they are just making me feel good, I would
agree. :-)
