I must have logged-on to the wrong newsgroup?  This can't be r.a.s., at
least not the r.a.s. that I was trying to log-on to!  It has been more
than 24-hours since the USGP F1 race....and there's been no "F1 bashing"
here?  This must be the wrong r.a.s.!  Dang, has my ISP messed up their
newsgroup servers again?

Crap....

OK, I'll bite - the cars sounded absolutely pathetic through the infield
section with the traction control kicking in repeatedly. The rasping
sound of automotive flatulence echoed through the mighty speedway....

Remove wings, bring back slicks, and ban TC and other driver aids.

Agreed?

And build a real track for the USGP... or use a existing track like Road
America.  The Indy circuit is *so* uninteresting.  It even sucks to drive it
in a sim.

Good idea - US GP East at Road America, US GP West at Laguna Seca.

It's a bit tight and twisty for my money, but I don't think they did
too bad. They're never going to run on an oval, so it's not a bad
compromise.

Yes... Completely ugly. The Porsches were more fun to watch off of T7 than the
F1 rides.
But...
Yes the infield portion of the track is a drag and could use a few changes and
an extra mile, but I see more passes coming off of the long frontstretch than
I see anywhere else at other GPs. Go Juan!

Yeah, I actually think the oval part of the track is one of the cooler
parts of all the tracks in the calendar. It's so cool to watch onboard
footage when the revs just keeps going and going and going and going,
shift up to 7th, and going and going and going and heavy braking. :)

Don....

How could you sleep with all that "real racing" going on in Kansas over
on NBC.....huh?

And, while we are on the topic........

a.  Neilson released its viewing-share figures this morning........the
NASCAR telecast "TV commercials" had a higher viewing-share than the
entire F1 race.  I guess we just aren't sophisticated enough here in the
USA to appreciate real pace lapping....ah, errr....I mean, real racing?

b.  How did Ferrari manage to lose?  I can't seem to find any reference
to this phenomenon, anywhere!

c.  Why were there only 22 cars?  Could F1 manage to bring a
full-race-field next year.....maybe?  Where were the rest of the F1
teams and cars?

d.  Why does F1.....with the "greatest drivers in the world".....need
traction control, launch control, etc.?

e.  The great "Shu" quotes from the USGP weekend (paraphrased):
            1.  "We enter the oval at such a low speed that the car
never comes close to its limits, its basically a rest and relax period
of the lap around Indy."
            2.  On the same weekend he also says, "There's too little
grip on the infield portion of the track.  With little *** laid down,
the tight corners and slow speeds.....our traction control and downforce
are not useful.  We actually have to drive the race car during that
portion of the lap and its very disconcerting, to say the least."

You have got to be kidding me or something?  This...is what comes
out of the mouth of the driver, some say...is the greatest F1 driver of
all time?  Jimmy Clark and others must be turning over in their graves!

I would like to make a hypothetical wager:

"Give "Shu Baby" the finest simulation equipment in the
world.....and 48-hours to practice in it running GPL.  Then, pit him
against any VROC driver chosen at random from the VROC chat room.....at
any GPL track chosen at random."  Shu will lose 90% of the time!

VROC has the best drivers in the world......certainly not F1.

However, all of this is just my opinion.

Regards,

Tom

Not telecast live here...

No comment, just that Indy wasn't the worst of the season, at least there is
one high-speed stretch into tightish corner left. Most tracks have now been
modified in order to be void of overtaking opportunities. ;-(

1) Barichello got held up after his 1st stop.
2) His engine broke in an attempt to make up for that near the end.
3) Mika got passed MS by staying out longer and putting in a couple quick
laps before pitting (I think).

There are only 22 F1 cars (11 teams). The FIA put their foot down after a
period where more teams were allowed and some of them "embarrassed the
sport" by going bankrupt. Now one needs a totally ridiculous amount of
kapital and budget to be allowed to run an F1 team. Toyota will add two cars
to the field next year to form a total of 24.

There's also the problem of "our" tracks. They were built when an F1 team
brought a truck and possibly a tent or a caravan. Now they're stretched to
bursting with the amount of equipment and exhuberant hospitality
installation each teams brings along... there just isn't room for more
unless they locate the lesser teams off-site. I see this happening in the
not so distant future. ;-(

Most motorsport enthousiasts are scratching their heads over that one. Stay
tuned.

Agree here, the transition into the oval should flow more in order to allow
for more speed to be carried. Trap speeds of around 240-245mph would have
been more interesting as this is beyond the normal design envelope for an
F1.

He means they cannot push the cars through that section, even with all their
gizmos, and are therefore reduced to merely "driving" the car through there
(as opposed to racing). It is indeed a sad state of affairs that the
technical rules/cars are hampering the racer in the exercise of his craft in
F1, but you won't get an "F1 fan" to agree with you.

They've been imitating a rotisserie for quite some time now, IMO.

48 hours would be a little short for him to re-train his synapses, that
would be unfair. But no doubt he would lose at least half the time, even if
given ample time to adjust.

Best virtual ones for sure, although there's some mighty impressive folk in
the N4 arena too.

Jan.
