As much as the Speedvision crew gets put down on occasion, I would rather
have listened to them drunk as listen to the coverage ABC provided.  Just
sad.  "Here's David Coulthard and ... another driver."  Sheesh!

This is where it's great to live in Canada. TSN carried the British
broadcast with Murray Walker and Martin Brundle plus I could switch over to
ABC when TSN went to commercial. I couldn't stand the ABC commentators so I
switched back as soon as possible.

For all their emphasis on British drivers (who really cares about Nick
Heidfeld or Jensen Button?) those guys just mean "F1" to me.

Except Heidfeld is German.

"For all their emphasis on European drivers..." ;o)

And their constant "requests" to the US TV producer (who obviously couldn't
hear them) to see more of Montoya and Barrichello, when the camera was
following M Schumacher etc.

"For all their emphasis on international drivers..." :oD

To be fair they do commentate a lot (too much) on Jensen and Eddie etc,
Heidfeld is/was a point of particular interest as he'd qualified up n past
the McLarens, and has been leapfrogged to a seat next to Coulthard next year
by a clearly inferior driver (Reikkonen).  So it was a good story to follow.

<ras bait>
At least the race was interesting, not like the CART at Rockingham, I fell
asleep watching that one.
</ras bait>

cheers

Oh, thanks John, my mistake. I just assumed he was British because he was
receiving undue attention given his race position.

This is the first F1 race I ever watched start to finish; I've never been
interested enough to get up at some god-awful hour in the AM to watch the
others (the times aren't very convenient for a Western Canadian...)

Hmm, I can't believe he meant what you heard in the translation.
Maybe they were using Altavista for the translation...

Let Jim Clark play GPL for 3 weeks and he would probably come to the same
conclusion that Jackie Stewart did.

Give him as much time as those guys have had and he would mop the floor with
them.  He's not where he is because of luck or money.

VROC drivers can practice without fear - they can push the limits in their
spare time without any dramatic consequences.

Anyone who devotes so much time to GPL has to be lacking a certain amount of
intelligence - intelligence that's almost certainly needed to be competitive
in F1.

No F1 bashing here. But I was very displeased with the coverage on ABC. The
only thing that makes F1 interesting to me is all the strategy. I do at
times find the races boring. The pitstops, and the laps the drivers do,
while others are pitting is to me very entertaining. ABC seems to have
missed this aspect of F1. The stategy is what seperates F1 from CART in my
opinion. I would have been just as well off to turn the sound completely
off, as I had to figure out what was going on by myself anyway.
So, now I will not be so pissed off to watch F1 at 6:30 in the morning any
more, at least Speedvision has decent coverage.

I thought the same thing!   You had 2 guys that knew of F1(Jenkins and
Cheaver), and one that sounded like he didn't have a clue(Priestly).

That race did get pretty dreary, but they have made the track 1/2 a
mile too short for a good race. Compare with Germany before...

That said, that was one hell of a final few laps. For a race with so
little overtaking, the end was sensational.

I had the best of both world.  ABC's usage of Bernie's digital feed with my
own commentaries on the RDS Channel.

It's about the only time in my life I ever used my PiP function on my TV :)

>  I guess we just aren't sophisticated enough here in the
> USA to appreciate real pace lapping....ah, errr....I mean, real racing?

Who cares, really?   It's not important, I still don't see the fuss about
bringing F1 back into America.  Corporate America already backs up F1 as
much as it can.  The USGP is just a test-bed for Bernie, he can take a
chance of giving an F1 date to the USofA while he slowly builds up the need
for F1 in Asia.

Some other driver was able to finish the distance in less time, duh ;)

That's a joke, no?

Because F1 is about drivers _AND_ technology.  Always was, always will be.

Stop being over-sentimental.  The sport has changed forever and will never
be the same.  Accept, or move on.
