GPL multiplayer LAN : I'm lost...

by kero.. » Tue, 19 Nov 2002 07:01:38

We have been playing Grand Prix Legend races for quite a while on a 2
computer LAN at my home. Never any problem. the 2 machines running the
same carsets, patch 1.2.0.1, D3D, disco, and carsound. My
900Mhz/512MB/Gforce2/MSFF Athlon computer acting as a server and
therefore I did the necessary changes as suggested in the bandwidth
patch to core.ini. Connected to the other
600Mhz/256MB/RivaTNT264MB/MSFF AMD-K6 computer, applied the suggested
changes to core.ini for a "client" computer as suggested in the
bandwidth patch. Never had troubles, worked liked a charm!

Now I am trying to hook on a 3rd PC for a friend of mine that will
become the 3rd player on our LAN. The computer is a
Celeron400Mhz/128MB/RivaTNT16MB machine with 2 USB wheels that I use
as a mixed controller (Saitek R220 for the use of the pedals,
Thrustmaster 360 Modena as the wheel - the pedals broke long ago),
same carsets as the other computers, same patches, same fixes,
core.ini set to be a "client" computer (as suggested..etc..) but...
On selecting multiplayer on my new "client" I can see the hosted game,
I can select it but when I enter the track I briefly appear in the pit
stall before getting thrown back at the multiplayer screen and a red
message in the top corner of the screen tells me that "receive
throughput fell to unacceptable levels"

This clearly must be caused by some setting. With my knowledge of
gamer LAN fysics I am completely lost. I clearly have to alter some
sort of setting but what and where?? Any help is welcomed!!
If necessary I could post the [communication] excerpts of my core.ini
files...
greetings
Butchinski

Could it be something odd like a bad network cable?

Cable was fine but I discovered another strange thing :
When I let the "bad" machine act as a server the others can take part
in the multiplay  with no problems!

Do you have some kind of firewall running on the 3rd pc?

Nope, turned everything off. Can it be that my 1st server (900Mhz -
optimised server.ini) just is sending in too many packets to the poor
400Mhz -crappy Motherboard machine???
It has 96MB RAM and a Radeon VE though...

The machine should handle the communications with ease.
Perhaps you have a net_..._send_every setting wrong. They should all be
equal at 2 or 3 across all machines.
If you like post or send the Communications settings. Another thing to do is
add the following:

[ Hack ]
...
log_chat_to_file = 1

and:

[ Communications ]
...
log_server_comm_errors = 1
log_server_connect_status = 1

You will then get some info in the chatpad.log file in the GPL folder. Maybe
it will reveal a bit more.
