I've been playing GPL off and on for over a year and given about 100 billion
more hours of practice time, I think I might be ready to compete in a rookie
race in "F3" cars on VROC. :-)
In the meantime, I'm satisfied with just practicing. The good news for me is
that, through a happy sequence of events, I now have two machines (one an old
PI-233 with a Voodoo2 card and the other a new PIII-1Ghz with a GeForce2 GTS)
capable of at least playing GPL and I have two wheels (one an old TM T2 and
one a new TM Ferrari FF). It won't happen too often, but I'm looking forward
to the times when my brothers are visiting so that we can waste the night
away going head-to-head in GPL.
I have a REALLY stupid question about multiplayer racing. I've tried to
avoid
asking my stupid question to the group, but hours of research have left me
still confused.
Basically, my question is this: HOW can the client (the computer joining the
race) elect to use one of the trainer cars in the race? I just don't see any
way for the client to make any choice. By default, every car in the race is
the "F1" or "GP" or whatever you want to call the full-powered
car.
It is my understanding that the WinVROC software allows the host of the race
to define the class of the cars allowed and the clients to choose too?
However, I don't think I need to/want to/can run WinVROC on my LAN games. I
tried running it and it just wants to connect to the VROC server on the
Internet.
I HAVE managed to do what I want, but it seems like there has GOT to be an
easier way. I edited core.ini on my server machine to specify the min and
max class for the race to be "2". This forces all the cars in the race
(except maybe the AI cars?) to be the basic trainers. But, what if I set min
to "2" and max to "0"? Now I'm allowing all classes to race,
but, like I
said, I don't see any way for the client computer(s) to pick what class they
want to use. Also, do I really have to edit core.ini every time I want to
host a different type of race?
I have a million more little questions that are still haunting me even after
spending a ton of time on all the great GPL sites (a special thanks to Alison
for her dedication to this game), but I'll keep them to myself for now.
Thank You,
Mike "STILL just trying to learn Monza" Walters
p.s. What I've learned from years of researching things on the newsgroups is
that NO hardware or software works for everyone. If I took the heart-felt
advice of usenet users, I would NOT be using GPL, would NOT have a Dell
computer, would NOT have DirecPC to download my patches and add-ons, would
NOT be using a ThrustMaster wheel, and would NOT be using a GeForce GTS card
OR a Voodoo card. As it turns out, not without a little tweaking here and
there, all of this works very, very fine for me. Sometimes it is difficult
to determine from the experiences of others whether a product is BAD or just
imcompatible with a specific setup. It seems that, ultimately, we must all
learn it for ourselves.
