I have a question about cheating in N4 with fixed setups.

by btgos » Thu, 04 Oct 2001 01:44:26

Hello All.
I saw a previous thread about cheating in N4 and it started me wondering. At
a recent Daytona race, fixed setup on a Papy Loop server, my qualifiying
time was about 50 seconds and change. Since I don't normally qualify well,
and it was a fixed setup I didn't think too much about it, until I saw the
other times. More than a few people had times in the low to mid 47 second
range. As I said I know I don't qualify well, but these times seemed very
fast. Then during the race, after the mandatory first lap wreck, myself and
two other slower cars hooked up in a draft in an attempt to catch the
leaders, when one of the fast cars from qualifying (who had been part of the
big wreck) passed us like we were at half throttle.
How do they do this?
I can only feel some sort of cheating was going on, but have no idea how it
is possible.
If anyone knows, please make it public so that hopefully Papy can put and
end to it.
Thanks,
btgoss

Did you have any damage and did this person pass you and pull away?

That's the thing, we had been so far behind that we had no damage. And he
really blew past us, and I am not exaggerating. It was very strange.

Did he then leave your draft or did you guys keep up with him?

He left us. We couldn't keep up, and we tried. We kept a farily close draft
and he went around us like we had stopped. And then kept going. He finished
in the top five or ten...and this was the usual Loop Daytona field of
something like 30...so he was moving.
It almost seemed like controlled warp, or at the very least a setup that was
much better than the setup on the server.
I know that you can modifiy a file to remove the "restrictor plates", but I
had thought that type of cheating was not possible on the servers. He had
that much power, perhaps someone has figured out a way to remove the plates.
I really don't know.
Has anyone else seen this type of behavior? Or I am starting to look like
some sort of Troll/crank?

I've seen this also on a fixed race that made me believe that
possibly my controller isn't calibrated correctly. It may take
me forever to draft onto someone's bumper if at all and lag .5
secs down at best, but I'll have someone down 3 secs catch me
in one lap and pass me like I was standing still without even
using my draft. Perhaps my technique on taking the turns and
half-loop isn't as good as it could be, I don't know. But they
do appear to reach 5mph more on straights than I can *with*
draft.

Cheers,
Rod.

Don't appear like a troll/crank, I just run the Brick-RSN servers and was
interested if there was anything that I could be looking for on my side to
prevent a possible problem.

It is POSSIBLE, that the server had random temp's turned on and this person
joined the race during qualifying or left the server and rejoined prior to
the race starting.  There is a weather bug in N4.  It is possible his
weather on his system was different (Ex... He had cloudy weather and yours
was clear).

Yeah, we seen that at the LAN event. One driver had a different temp than
all the rest of us. Weird.

I have a question about cheating in N4 with fixed setups.

by REDLINE42 » Thu, 04 Oct 2001 15:13:47

Yup I've noticed this on Papy servers the last time I was there, (2-3 weeks
ago).

I thought that some of the "Great Laps" during qualifying was a little to
fast.
Usually the Qualifying laps are all within 10ths of a second for the first
10-15 Qualifiers with fixed setups, with the newbie's 15- 20+ a second down.
At Daytona 50.xxx are usual Qualifying laps.

But I've seen usually a couple of racers (pals? clan?) get mid 49's with all
other racers in awe, "GL #146" etc.
In the times that I am on the Papy servers I race about 10 to 15 races on an
average. At selected varying times of Day/Week.
Had a good bunch of races early one Saturday morning, guess all the
"Kiddy's" must of been hung over from Friday night partying.

But I haven't had a good race in N4 for about a month, seems at certain
times the wreakers/pit road speeders are back in force. Could it be that the
"Hackers" may have gotten around the CD Key Ban? Or just maybe no one is
reporting them?

That's why I think (IMO) Papy should have Human monitors on their servers
during peak times when this is prevalent.
I'll volunteer. :-) <<<< that would be the ultimate "Revenge" to get back at
all the racers that come flying out of the pits and merge before turn 1. he
he.

I have had on an occasion been in an "Open Night" league N4 server, (and N3
a long time ago) that was monitored by a human, and anyone playing
"shenanigans" would disappear quickly.

Here are some links for what some are trying to do about the cheat/hacks in
the FPS "Half Life".

Now I don't even own Half Life, (haven't seen it on the bargain self yet, he
he) this is just for a reference on online cheating.
For the one's that say about cheating "maybe they are just a better player".

What's that old saying about Farting? "He who is first to deny it, Delt it."
