GPL - Voodoo3 Graphics Glitches

by Kevi » Mon, 17 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I have a SB Live!, a LWFF, and a V3 3000. I was also reluctant to install
DX7 also, but I recently had to (DX7a) after some problems with my LWFF, for
trouble shooting. I've had few problems, although I've gone back to the 3.25
Logitech drivers. That Profiler still drives me nuts - sometimes the
programmable keys work, sometimes they don't. With 3.30 you have to use the
Profiler, but with 3.25 you can uninstall it and still use the wheel.

I do have a couple of odd little things since installing DX7a and the new
3Dfx drivers, neither of which is really a huge problem and may be related
to my set-up:

1) After leaving an on-line race, the WVROC window gets scaled to 1/4 of the
screen (1024x768 desk top). If I click the reduce button, and then the full
screen button, it goes back to full screen.
2) I had weird color corruption of my desk top (lime green!) after a GPL
session, when I had a texture on the desk top. Gone to just a colored back
ground, and it is fine now.

Think that is about all I've noticed. Other than that, everything works
great, although I haven't noticed any improvements anywhere.

GPL - Voodoo3 Graphics Glitches

I have just recently upgraded my system so that I could gain the full
benefit from GPL (previously my system only allowed 20-25FPS!).
Unfortunately, although the frame rate has improved dramatically to
30-36FPS, I now have slight graphic glitches similar to those I originally
experienced with a Banshee card.  The best way I can think of describing it
is that the racing groove now looks like an bright speckeled snake skin!
I am sure that a driver upgrade would resolve this small but annoying
problem however I note that in order to do so I also have to run DX7 and I
recall many people having problems including problems with LWFF and
Soundblaster Live Value, both of which I am running.

I would be grateful if anyone can advise if these problems have been
overcome.   In anticipation I have downloaded the Voodoo3 driver from
3dfxgamers, DX7a and LWFF 3.30 (+ patch) but I am reluctant to install them
until I hear what RAS has to say on the subject.  Is there a particular
order in which they should be installed?

TIA
Stewart

My system:-
AMD K6-2 450
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
Win 98 2nd ed.
Creative Labs Live! Value (Launcher 1.01)
LWFF USB
GPL 1.2.0.1

PS
Could my problems be realted to RAM?  Currently I only have 32MB of PC/100
loaded.

Sounds to me like you are having a Gamma problem. I had a similar problem
whith my voodoo2 and the latest drivers, turning the gamma down a couple
notches fixed it in most games. Try going to a previous version of V3
drivers or mess with the gamma settings.

V3, DX 7.0a, latest 3dfx drivers...absolutely no problem with GPL.  I should
note that I have had absolutely no problems with the V3 from the day I put
it in, with earlier drivers and earlier DX (on any title, not just GPL).  I
also have a FFB wheel and SB Live! sound card, not that they make any
difference to your problem.

What V3 drivers are you using?  And get DX 7.0a if you haven't already--it
improves FFB (DirectInput) dramatically.  In fact, as far as I can tell,
that's all it does is upgrade the DirectInput. DX 7 (not a) did create some
controller problems (although not for me).

Marc.

There is a toggle box named 'limit textures to 2 MB' or similiar
in the Voodoo properties screen that I had to set to make
GPL work with my Voodoo3. The problems were similar to what
you describe so you should try that one.

My brother just got a new PC with V3 2000 and was seeing the problem you're
talking about in GPL.  An upgrade of the 3DFx drivers plus DirectX 7.0a
caused no problem with the SB Live Value but still did not fix the problem.
After he upgraded GPL to v1.2, the problem went away.

If you haven't downloaded the 1.2 patch, do that first before you change
your drivers.  It may save you some frustration.  DirectX 7.0a screwed up my
SB 128 and it took me a few hours to get everything back into working order.
