GPL' Lets get those frame rates up !!!

by John » Sat, 16 Jun 2001 05:01:29

I want to start a string looking for the magic to find the last few frame
rate improvements.
Please ignore everything below.(unless you are really bored)

I spent way too much time last night working on this to let it go.
Below are the specs for my setup and it seems to be pretty good.

Detail Bias is at abut 50% thats what I would like to get up.

In 11th place on the grid at SPA of 19 cars I get 27/29 fps.
35/36 fps by turn one.

Using the New
DirectX 7 Direct3D Rasterizer for Grand Prix Legends
Here's the url: www.papy.com/downloads/gpl_d3d.exe

With these settings:

[ Direct3D7 ]
D3DDevice = 0 ;0
TossHighestMip = 0 ;0
DoubleMirrorResWidth = 0 ;1
DoubleMirrorResHeight = 0 ;1
DirectMirrorRendering = 0 ;1
DisableZBuffer = 0 ;0
AlphaThreshold = 1 ;1
TransparentMipsDrawOrder = 1 ;1
TrilinearFiltering = 1 ;1
AnisotropicFiltering = 16 ;14 wrong
LODBias = -50 ;-75

On this system:
Using Win 2k / 500Mhz Cpu / Matrox G400
196 Mb ram. DirectX 7.

How much do you care about sounds?
How few sounds can you live with? I have the number of sounds set to 4 in
the GPL settings window.
A guaranteed fps increase is also found by decreasing the soundquality in
the app.ini.
Try soundquality=0 in the app.ini inside the gpl folder, if your ears can
stand it, your eyes will love it!!

Sounds,
Thats good. I go for three to six sounds. but it sure sounds good with more.

I'll check sound quality.

Also, does a quality sound card (Sound Blaster Live Value) really help FPS.
If I can't bump up the number of sounds with it then I use the old card.

Just Brainstorming this one.

That's odd. I tried the new D3D patch on my G400 with the default
core.ini suggested for it (which seems identical to what you have
posted), and the 27/29fps I used have on Spa grid dropped to 15/17.
Considered that undriveable and went straight back to the original
D3D.
I just thought, well, they never mentioned the G400 in the readme for
this patch - what gives?
(PIII 550 on Asus P3B-F, 256Meg RAM).

Hi John,

Try setting:
AnisotropicFiltering = 0

Also, if you have the filters enabled in core.ini and in your
tweak-program/driver (whatever it is for your card) you may be forcing
the card to do the same job twice! Some cards (eg. mine) have settings
that force the card to use them regardless whether the game has that
setting or not.

A modern high quality sound card should cause very very little framerate
hit.

No disrespect intended, but can some of the graphics gurus confirm this??
It sounds unlikely to me, but my card is one with those options, so...

An SBlive will definitely make a big difference. It allows multiple
sounds to be played simultaneously, as well as putting virtually no
load on the cpu. Well worth it, but there are plenty of other
soundcards available as well. What card do you have at the moment?

El Cheapo,
Aureal Vortex with soundblaster emulation.

Never been too happy with this card.

$55 or so for a soundblaster live. But hard to find.
How about the many other soundblaster cards?

Well, the sblive value is what I use myself, and it works pretty well
for me. US$55 sounds alright to me although I'm from Australia and
don't know US prices well. The only other brand I'd recommend is
Guillemott, which is very well regarded.

DON'T get an sb 128 or any of the other ones they make. They're not
much better than what you've already got. The platinum is best, but
US$250-300 I believe. Not worth it unless you're gonna use the
features (which I wouldn't)

just a question; I know there are a bunch of different SB Live-types
around (value, gold, gamer and all that), but they're all the same
card, right?  only software and accessories (like front panel
connectors) differ?

Same basic card, just additional features, wave processing stuff,
dolby 5.1, optical links, remote control, etc. But the value is all
you need for good ***. They all use the same chip.
