A Proposal for an Informal N4 Racing Group

It's not really a league, because I don't envision it as one where you
keep ongoing results, but rather just an opportunity for serious but
not fanatical drivers to get together for a couple or three short
races one or more times a week at the track which hosts the real world
race that week.

It's inspired by the VROC-F2 group for GPL where there are several
races a week hosted by the group.  It's all just for fun and nobody
keeps track of results toward any sort of championship, and that
attitude of comaraderie is what's made it such a great success.

Ideally, there would be more than one session per week, perhaps one
held early in the evening for east-coasters who have to get up early
and another for left-coasters who do not.  Maybe, if the group wanted
to, there could even be one big get-together at some agreed-upon time
for everyone to meet for the Big Race of the Week.

But again, no tracking of results, just friendly racing without all
the idjits you encounter in pick-up events.

Post comments here and if there is sufficient interest, maybe we can
get something started.

That sounds like a good idea.  Particularly considering all of the folks who
have posted complaining about the destruction derby that generally happens
on sierra's servers.  The best part of this, from my standpoint, is that
there's no time requirement, which is what's always kept me from doing
leagues in the past.  If you have time to race, you log on, but if not, no
harm done since results aren't tracked.  But the better drivers will be
obviously be informally recognized over the course of the coming
weeks/months.  I'll be curious to see what others think of this idea.

That sounds perfect to me. I'm not fast, but I am capable of racing
clean.

Count me in. I don't have the time for a league, but this would be great.
The crashers online are driving me nuts.

I'd be interested as long as the races don't clash with VROC-F2 events and
some are held at Euro friendly times.

Being thoroughly tired of NASCAR DEATHMATCH myself you can count me in.
If the goal is to simply have someplace to go when in the mood I'm wondering
if the "league" could consist of just a simple scheme that would let us know
who is who on Sierra.com along with some way to keep out the "riff-raff".
Perhaps some "standard" names for hosted games along with a
"password-of-the-week" to get us in.
Any members of this "Laidback League" who wanted to host a race would
just start whatever track he wanted, name the game "Laidback Daytona" or
some such and lock the game with this weeks password. Those of us on Sierra
seeing this will know it is a "sane" race that we can join because we are on
the mailing list that sends the weekly password.
Perhaps not a very secure system but considering probable mental
capacity of the people we are trying to avoid mabe secure enough. We may not
even need that mailing list. It would be my guess that the people we want to
avoid find this NG increadably boreing. If so I would not be too surprised
if just leaving the password here on the NG for any and all to see cuts the
problem considerably.
Could be that this would not work in the real world but it might be
worth a try.

Do yourself a favor, limit membership to no more than 100 people.
VROC-F2 ain't what it used to be and, with 600 members, how could it?
Use something like Yahoo (formerly eGroups) groups to maintain the
club and make it so someone who wants to join they have to email the
moderator.  Start with a small bunch of drivers you respect and let
them vouch others into the group.

You probably know enough decent (respectful, mature) drivers to get
the ball rolling.  Don't be impatient to grow it and let the gates
swing open.  Things can get out of hand rapidly if you don't let the
culture of the group form and take root.

I'm all for it. I'm personally looking for something where if I don't
show up for a particular race, I'm not blackballed :)

sometimes, with work and family requirements, you just can't make it.
i.e., I work in IT and run a network for a company.  If we have
problems, guess who is working late?  So the race takes a backseat...

I personally like a setup where maybe every night, the "league" has a
race (or two or more?) where known clean drivers get together in a
password protected race and you know who you're racing with.  I get
nervous driving around people who want to act stupid online.

Wow...  Great response!  Sounds like there are a lot of folks looking
for something more than pickup races but less than a full-blown
league...

I've not run a league or anything since I handled a small group
running F1GP back on the old GEnie service about 7 or 8 years ago, so
I'm not really good about the details.  But the way I see it, we need
a mailing list, a place to talk and a place to store files, such as a
carset we can use in our races.

I will volunteer to provide the second item on that list.  I already
run a political forum on Delphi, and I just now started a new one for
our group.  You have to sign up to use the service, but there's no
fee.  I've been on there since 1996 and they do a real good job...  In
addition to the forum, we can have live chats.

The address is:
http://www.delphi.com/N4RacingGroup/messages

The only thing there now is a place for people to check in and a poll
about what times are best for people to race, but that should expand
quickly as people visit and post notes.

If someone would like to volunteer to run the mailing list or provide
some webspace for files, let us know either here or on the Delphi
forum.

Hopefully we can start having some preliminary races as early as next
week.

See you all soon and thanks for your great response!
