Best racing game?

I know you must have heard that question hundreds of times, but what is
the best race game available for the PC as of..right now? (playable on a
DX66 8 megs of ram...it probably doesn't make a difference, but just in case)
I have played Grand Prix F1, and it's pretty fun! (especially a whole
season with a friend ;-) But I wonder if there is anything more recent.

And , while I'm here, is there any patch/upgrade for GPF1? If so, what do
they fix/improve?

Perhaps you should try out IndyCar Racing. It should run on your PC (I have
got a 486 DX2 66 w/ 8MB RAM, too) and it is fun to drive, too. Unfortunately
the game options are not as good as in WC/F1GP (e.g. no multiplayer season
possible, just single races) but the graphics and the driving is IMHO
slightly better than F1GP (but more difficult - the driving, of course...).
NASCAR is running on a 486 but not as good as IndyCar or F1GP -  have 13 FPS
with 20 opponents which is not that good actually... :-(  But try it if you
know someone who has it, it is quite fun if you don't mind driving on
speedways (very different driving characteristics than a F1 or IndyCar)

Don't know, sorry.

Well, the newest version of the main game is v1.05, which allows you to play
linked via modem or null-modem. ( The car also handles differently in
comparison to v1.03 BTW )
However, in the mean time a lot of excellent patches and utilities have
been written for F1GP such as the Telemetry data logger Gpperf and
the accompanying  viewer Gpanalyser. With these you can analyse every
tiny bit of information you gathered while driving : Speed, gear,
revs, max.speed, min.speed. In the newest version you can even see
the driving line !
Gplaptim alters the***pit LEDs a bit and checks for touching grass
besides fixing the random power degradation.

Check out http://www.racesimcentral.net/~dgymer/home.html for more information ( Its great ! )

That's the understatement of the year! I started out with F1GP when it arrived
on the Amiga, then F1GP on the PC, ending with IndyCar in 1994 which I've used
until this very day so I now the difference. ICR is much more difficult because it
way more realistic.

F1GP is an arcade game and plays like one. It's fun but totally unrealistic as
compared to IndyCar Racing 1.x. But F1GP 2 will hopefully change all that
dramatically! :) So will ICR 2.0 when it's realeased late fall(October...).

This fall will be a race sim feast and we should be so ***y grateful!

To Papyrus and Microprose: We are not worthy! ;)

Just got hold of a magazine with reviews/previews of variuos racing
games and the only problem seems to be which ones to go for! F1GP2
screen shots look superb, Need for Speed has nice looking backgrounds
but the car crashes look a little dodgy! (nice range of cars -
Diabalo, Ferrari 512, RX-7, ZR1, Viper, NSX, Supra, 911), Screamer
which looks a little like Ridge Racer, and Destruction Derby. I think
all of the previews must be on betas so I guess we will have to wait
for the releases
One problem might be that they will all rush to production
with so much competition around so hopefully there won't be too many
bugs?
