N4 1.3 patch NO-CD?

There isn't one (and I honestly hope that there will never be).

Sony has updated their Securom copy protection which N4 uses and the new
version is included in the 1.3 patch. The problem that has been used to
crack various versions of securom protection for years, doesn't work with
this new version.

An updated version of this cracking software hasn't been released yet
(AFAIK).

Yes, but leaving the CD in the drive is a small price to pay to try to cut
down on s/w piracy.  DO you whine about every  little thing?

leaving the cd in the drive only gets in way of regular users.  Anyone who
really wants to pirate something will find a way.  In this case with new
protection, it is only a matter of time before the hackers break it.  I
rarely keep a cd in my drive.  I burnt out a 40x Toshiba cdrom drive in just
about a year.  I plan on extending the life of the HP burner that replaced
it by NOT using it casually.

Yes, they will, but in the meantime they're screwed so be happy.  WHy is it
most of you guys could care less about piracy?  Software COULD be so much
less expensive if they could control it better, am I one of the few that
actually understands that concept?

N4 1.3 patch NO-CD?

The concept I understand is...the companies will charge what they think
will result in the highest sales figures.  If using copy protection, they
increase the amount of sales, they STILL WILL NOT LOWER THE PRICE.  All copy
protection does is siphon profits from the distributor to the cp provider,
increases support costs, losses consumer trust, and still ANY person who is
serious about ripping it off, will do so quickly.
I do not advocate pirating...but I'd be really suprised if publishers
actually think securerom or any other form of protection is truly stopping
piracy.
Prices only come down when sales drop off.  Or the publisher doesn't think
there is enough demand to warrant a high price.  I can't recall ever a press
announcement proclaiming that using Copy Protection would allow the
publisher to charge less for a title.

N4 1.3 patch NO-CD?

I disagree - about a year ago, I posted how my GPL CD was so battered that
it barely works any more, I emailed Papy asking for a replacement (I'd
gladly send my old one to them as proof), but was told that they'd just sell
me a new one for $10, I think it was. I know that's not a great deal of
cash, but it might be to someone. I can copy my music CDs if I want (for
personal use), I can copy my videos, pretty much anything that I use for
'entertainment', but I can't copy GPL or N4 to race online. Already, after 4
months, my N4 CD is looking VERY worse for wear - if I have to replace that,
that's a full-priced game. So yeah, I'd LOVE a no-CD for N4, please, one
that works online.

Hey Bomber, I learned a trick here on r.a.s. (thanks Dave) a while ago
about how to make a surprisingly working no-CD for N4. You need a bit
of harddisk space though. Get DaemonTools
(http://www.daemon-tools.com/daemon.htm) and CloneCD (http://home.onet.co.uk/~cloneclinic/CloneFiles/ccddown.htm).

First, use ClodeCD to make a image of the N4 cd, then use daemon tools
to use the image as a virtual cd-rom drive.

It works as a charm. Loading speeds are fast, the cd-check never fails
(as is does on my system with the dvd-rom) and you havne't copied the
cd. I haven't tried this with any other games at the same time,
but with my new 60 GB harddisk, I can fill it with a few favorites I
think.

What the hell are you doing with your cd's that they're battered up
after 4 months? Don't use your cd's as coasters!

ok, then why isn't Windows XP much cheaper as you can't just copy it and put
it on multiple machines like the old version?

IMO the real pirates are the software companies that put out half finished
software and charge full price for it.

So THAT'S where I'm going wrong! I was expecting you to chip in, too,
mentioning the five-damn-minutes-to-load-N4-every-sodding-time thing....I
want a no-CD patch if only to cure that!
