GPL and Direct X. Please help.

GPL and Direct X. Please help.

I have a PII 233, 128 megs ram, 8-meg Voodoo 2 and SB live.  I knew exactly
how much detail to turn down to get 36fps.  Life was good.

I installed "The Sims" for my kid this past weekend.  During the install,
the program required me to update Direct X.  I had reservations, but went
ahead.  Sure enough, I've lost 6 to 8 fps, and even worse, I get "hitches"
in the video for fractions of a second.  But if I'm in a curve in GPL,
that's enough to make me lose control of the car.

I looked, but could not figure out what version of Direct X was installed
(but I didn't really know where to look).  Is there something I can do to
get me precious performance back?  Do I need to update drivers?  Something?

Any help will be DEEPLY appreciated!

Regards

Kurt

Odd, GPL doesn't use DX.  I also have GPL and The Sims installed and haven't
had any problems.  I'm running with DX7a, V3 3000 o/c 178mhz, SB Live, LWFF.
If you have a V3 and don't have one installed, I suggest you download a
Voodoo tweaker and unsync your card and monitor refresh rates.  You can find
a utility at www.voodooextreme.com or www.avault.com

Good luck.

Make sure that you are using the latest drivers for your soundcard and your
videocard....

Dx shouldnn't be a problem but many users have had problems when
they upgraded.  If all else fails, try un-installing gpl and
re-installing.  After updating your sound and video drivers.

Type  MSINFO32.EXE in your "run" box, and look under "tools" for the DX
Diagnostic tool--that'll show your version on its first screen.

I'm surely no expert, but from reading posts on ras, it seems that many
folks had trouble with DX 7.0, but trouble went away with ver. Dx7.0a....but
I haven't a clue why.

It doesn't use the Direct3D part of DirectX, but I believe it uses other
features (DirectInput, for example).
