There's also the free Microsoft virtual PC that runs other operating systems
insice a virtual machine such as Windows 98 SE (you'll need a copy of
of Windows 98 to install it). The virtual PC has a virtual floppy and cd-rom
and images for these are avaliable like boot floppy image to install Windows 98.
The issue with virtual PC is there is no USB support, so USB based
controllers don't work. I don't know about DOSBOX. Also when I tried Need
For Speed Special Edition, the frame rates from the Windows 95 version were
less than 1 per second, and the DOS version didn't work at all).
Does DOSBOX allow the USB controllers to work?
Not really. Cars feel glued to the tracks compared to today's sims.

Obviously GPL was great too. Wow, has it really been TEN years since it
was launched?
AFAIK dosbox will allow any attached controller to be used (via the DFend
frontend program which has many, many options which can be tweaked)
I installed Ubuntu on it in about 15 min.

Is that the British one that we call Mobil1 Rally over here? I have that
one if it is what you are talking about.
Actually for adjustability (real word?) and realism, Viper Racing beats
GPL IMHO. The only limitation really is the state of the add-ons - buggy
and not very good. It's 16 bit graphics though. Try Sports Car GT too if
you have a GL card. Viper *really* needs over 200Mhz to work half decently
though.
Better make sure the caps are good (Rubycon's) or you will most likely be
getting a NEG for your efforts.
A posting line wrap could be your friend.
I know of several games that won't work on any processor that is faster than
500-600MHz.
Some games will just freak out running on a faster processor than they were
coded for.
GPL is one & then there is the DirectX issue.
