Graphics Question-F1 2001

Just bought F1 2001(and patched it), and the graphics options are huge. I
have tried playing with these a little but the frame rate is lower than I
would expect with my system (20fps-35fps, 21 cars,***pit view). The replay
can start at no more than 10 frames per second. Want to race as quickly as I
can, so without sounding bone idle, if someone has a similar spec to mine
perhaps they could guide me as to the settings they have found to give the
best FPS. (I have read the readme file and relunctantly used 16 bit colour
and 1024 res - hoped to do better than this). I wondered whether there are
just one or two settings in particular that can be altered to make a big
difference?

I have an Athlon 1.4, 512mb ram, Geforce 2 Ultra (21.83 Nvidia driver), FF
Act-Labs wheel/pedal snd SB Live card.

Thanks

I discovered in UbiSoft's F1 Racing Championship that certain graphics
options do nothing in the game, yet cause a serious tank in framerate. Now..
it doesn't make sense to compare two different games on two different
systems... but I would try disabling everything, and then turning it all
back on one at a time until you find your black sheep.

My memory has always been faulty (too many ski crashes as a ***ager!) but I
think I've seen threads here about FPS hits with FF enabled on Act and MS
wheels. Now those could have been Rally Trophy related so take this with a
grain of salt.

However, I have a very similar PC: Athlon 1.3, 256mb RAM, GF2 Ultra (21.83
drivers), LWFF, and Diamond MX300 sound card. I get 50-80fps consistently
with the occasional dip when I spin and there is lots of smoke. I run at
1280x1024x16 with all options maxed, including the ones you can tweak in the
INI files (as per the Advanced Options doc).

Note that this is in training mode with at most 1-2 other cars on the track.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the kind of numbers you're getting in a full
field race, so if that's what your seeing maybe it's just the way it is. If
you're getting those numbers in training then maybe try turning FF off to
see if it helps.

I run 1280x1024x16 with graphics all at the highest settings, and get
min=80fps/max=120+fps in Test mode, min=35fps/max=115fps QuickRace 21 cars,
***pit view at Spa.
Shuttle mobo w/KT266A, Athlon 1.400 oc'd 10x150mhz =1.500, Gainward GF3
vanilla, AC97 sound, no FF.
Tried (21.83 Nvidia driver), currently using (23.10 Nvidia driver), not much
difference.

Forget the replays, they are way slower than in-car and look really bad.
Your system should be fast enough to get good in-car frame rates.  Try
turning special effects down, since the smoke really kills the fps.

Hmm, I am getting those framerates on a Celeron 566 running at 850 with a 32
mb MX card.
1024x768.
Are you running fsaa on? If so, try turning it off, and disabling vsynch.

Sorry you're having trouble, Paul.

But lest anyone draw a wrong conclusion:

At the back of the full grid at Monaco, I'm seeing no less than 22 FPS.

Big deal you say? Well, that's with everything everywhere maxed out, 4x
FSAA, at a paltry 2048 x 1536 x 16. Once the field runs off and leaves me,
I'm typically at 55-65 FPS.

With a 22" monitor and Klipsch 5.1, F1 2001 is scary good.

Now if I can just figure out how to enlarge the AGP aperture without support
in the BIOS, I think I can get this thing to work. ;-)

What do you say to developers that give you no less than FORTY force
feedback settings to fine tune? How about?...Thanks ISI...It's like being
there without the risk of dying and the cost of tires!

Buy this sim, and buy, beg, or borrow all the HP you can get your hands on.
You won't believe the result.

Check that. That's EIGHTY, not FORTY. Geez, my wife will never understand!

22.80 drivers, Act-Labs FF wheel, WindowsME and a Philips sound card. I get
around 40fps at 1600x1200x16.

I used to have a SB Live card but it killed my fps in N4. I believe it had
something to do with the infamous VIA/SB Live issue. Try pulling the SBLive
to see if thats the problem.

Agreed. While the game as a whole is a vast improvement, the replays leave a
bit to be desired (unless I'm missing something).

The instant replays, on the other hand, look great . . .

I think that Creative has very bloated drivers myself. The VIA/SB issue was
transfering large files from one IDE controller to another while playing a
sound. You are 150% correct about the frame rate increase I ditched a SB
Live 5.1 for a Phillips AE sound card and my frame rate with EAX and 3d
sound enabled was better than the SB with them off!  I go thru hardware
pretty good, but I'll be keeping the AE card for a very long time.
