GP2 joystick settings w/o steering help?

by All over the roa » Thu, 31 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Can anyone give me any suggestions on settings for joystick driving in
Gp2 without steering help? i.e. max lock degrees, reduce w/car speed and
sensitivity settings etc... I'm a gumby, I know, but I've been using
steering help up til now and, having found it's limits have switched
over. My main problem is desensitizing the steering input. Can anyone
give me examples of the settings they use?

You should have a look at

"http://www.powerup.com.au/~philmak/GP2MAN/control.htm#A5c Steering Summary"

This is a very good guide to set up your controls. In fact the whole site
is great for everybody who wants to get into GP2.

Are you using a Joystick or Steering Wheel/pedal controller? The best
way to desensitize the steering is to set it up in the Controller Config
so that the faster you are moving, the more steering input is required
to turn the same distance. Basically, this is speed sensitive steering.
Make sure that on the tight corners, you can still power through the
corners with some steering input left to spare, otherwise, if you go
through the corner too quickly (or if the speed sensitive steering input
is too high a figure) then you will be at maximum lock with the wheel,
but the corner will be too tight to negotiate.

Also, turn opposite lock help ON, as this helps you to catch the back
end of the car if it begins to fishtail.

Well, yes I understand all that, but I was more interested in the
actual numbers of what others use. I have been playing around with them
back and forth but can't seem to get a reasonable compromise between
having too much sensitivity at high speeds vs. too much maximum lock at
low speed.

I wouldn't turn on the opposite lock help--it makes the handling
kind of strange.  Sometimes the back of the car just seems to
catch itself with little or no driver input.  One of the coolest
things about GP2 is that when I first got it I thought it was
impossible to catch the back of the car, but now that I've
gotten better at it, it is really cool to get too much throttle
on and have to countersteer to catch the car--really builds
up the reflexes!
