I think it's just really quite difficult. I use a CH flightstick with no
steering help, no opposite lock, the lock set at 25deg, reduce with
speed 60% and low sensitivity 35%; basically I'm just too lazy to want
to move the stick much.
If I have any advice it is to drive a 'forgiving' car in the race. I
don't mean absolvo absolute, but something that allows you to touch the
brake in a turn without the back end overtaking the front. Use seperate
race and qualifying setups, and practice racing not just hotlaps - start
from the back, take it easy and see where you end up. Oh, the other
advice is practice & keep practicing. You will get better.
I have limited experience of ICRII (the demo), OTOH I have lot's of time
logged up on both IRC and the original Indy 500. Different beast's
right enough, but IMO fun to drive and an honest model of an indycar.
Some of the most awseome sim racing (I mean most exciting, pleasurable,
err satisfying rather than skilled) I have done was on the short New
Hampshire oval in IRC. Some people would say that was very sad indeed
:).
