I bought the ?Grand Prix? movie and I was amazed by the quality of that
1967 movie! One thing that struck me was the fact that those Formula 1
engine sounded like the engine found in Winston Cup cars. People have
been saying over and over again that the engine should have a high pitch
sound. Well, if the engines sound like the one in the film, the sound in
the GPL demo seems to be a pretty good approximation! The only
exception: the music that comes out of Jean-Paul Sarti's Ferrari. It's
in a league of it's own.

I've seen new screenshots and the game looks fabulous! Can't wait to
play the final version.

I think on the box of the video it says the in car shots were recorded in a
Ford GT-40 and a Porsche. So the sounds may not be authentic F1 sounds. Can
anyone confirm this?

Thanks
John

Gee, I'm not sure that's right.  I seem to recall that at least some
of the video was filmed from a car driven in actual races during the
season.  I rather doubt they'd let a GT-40 run around with the F-1
cars during actual races.

Now having said that, I suppose they could have used different sound
on the movie soundtrack.  But whatever they did, I agree it's
glorious.

We may forget that the screaming engines of today are a relatively
recent phenomenon.  I recall that the Matra V-12 in 1971 shocked
everyone by revving at something like 11,000 rpm.  It's fun to hear
the soundtrack on the video of the race they did at the old Ontario
Motor Speedway in 1971 (a combination of F-1 and F5000 cars):  You
hear the ubiquitous Cosworths, the rumbling 5 litre Chevy's and the
screaming Matra.

From what I've heard, they used Formula 2's, mocked-up to look like the
F1's. The in-car shots were from in-car cameras on these cars, as well as
*actual* race action from the F1's. They also used the Ford GT-40 and
Porsche (as you stated), which if I heard correctly, were FASTER
(straightline) than the F1's!!!

Not quite true, Herr Doktor!

The mock-ups were done with a few of the previous F1 chassis...the 1.5
litre formula.....with dummy exhaust systems mounts atop said cars.  In
fact, the dummy exhaust system on the Ferraris looks terrible and shakes
around so much that it gives the impression of being held on with
string! :-)

Shelby Cobra 427.

faster than the 1.5 litre cars, yes!!

The in-car shots, certainly at Monaco, were recorded in the "film star"
cars......1.5 litre machines dummied up to look as if they had 3.0 litre
engines.

The bulk of the *exterior* shots at Monaco are of the actual race
itself.

Anyone else find the engine sounds in the GPL demo _noisy_?  As
in badly-recorded-sound-samples noisy, not loud-engine noisy?

I'm using a SB16 MCD, if it matters.  (Yes, I know, Creative's
cards are far from audiophile quality -- but other games'
engines sound so much better on the same setup.)

Yes actually.  Just check out the F10 view, you don't hear the wind anymore.

Btw, (to the other guy), the sounds in GPL are only placeholders, and not
accurate at all from the real-life engine sound.  It's a remixed N2 sound.
You can change it in the Option.cfg file.  Just change the sampleRPM line to
what you want (higher = lower pitch AFAIK).

I have sampled the Cooper Maserati and the Ferrari from the Movie
Soundtrack (vinyl), they sound a bit better than the demo-sounds....:)

you can download them at:

http://home.c2i.net/thepaddock/

The Maserati doubles up as the Lotus, and is pretty good. The Ferrari
works as the Eagle, if you want some fun before the full
version......:))

See you all online??

No...don't do that, for crying out loud!
I am simply fortunate in having a reasonable amount of reference
material available......most of it is great for Trivial Pursuit! :-)

In addition to the engine sound there is also the sound of the airstream
rushing past.  It may just be that you are hearing this underlying noise
as "hash" rather than what it really is! :-)

I guess I need to go drive an open car at 150 mph before I comment
further on whether it's icky bad noise or realistic good noise.
Anyone got one I can borrow?  :->

Well, I've got an open car but whilst it might get to just over 110 mph,
I think it would be having a hard time to get to 150!

However, I can assure you that at 100mph the amount of noise that is
generated by the slipstream is far, far greater than anything in GPL!
:-)
