Rally Trophy and TOCA 3 DVD only?

by Jay » Sun, 16 Dec 2001 23:59:08

I've been reading the reviews and checking out the info on some of the newly
released, and soon to be released titles like Rally Trophy, and Codemasters
new TOCA Race Driver, as well as EA's new Australian V8 Touring car gamem
and it appears an alarming trend is going on.

These titles are only available on DVD format for PC's! Unless I'm mistaken?
Please enlighten me if I'm wrong, but this seems to be the way of the future
for a lot of new games.

Looks like I'll need to shell out some cash for a DVD player for the old PC
if I want these sims :-(

Also, any word on getting a copy of these games in the States?
Also... Is it true that Rallisport challenge will only be available for the
XBOX? Crap!

This will give people another reason to download the games off the net. It's
a bad move by the software companies if it's true. If you didnt have a DVD
player and there really was agame you wanted would you shell out about 100
(?) combined for the game and DVD or download it for free?

My copy of Rally Trophy is on CD. It comes in a DVD box, maybe that's
causing the confusion...?

Rally Trophy is due to be released in the US on 2/15. TOCA Race Driver is
the only one that I have seen listed as a DVD-ROM. I am all for it.
Hopefully this will mean more content. I have been waiting for the use of
high resolution compressed textures forever. If you have a PC capable of
running these new sims at acceptable rates then why wouldn't you have a DVD
drive. You can get a 16X for $50. Get with the times Jethro. ;)

Depending on what you read TOCA is going to be CD-ROM or DVD.

It makes sense to produce DVD as you can use the same factory for PS2, XBOX
and PC versions but I doubt a TOCA game will really require the storage of
DVD.  I haven't seen a racing sim yet to come close to filling a CD-ROM.

Alarming? DVD drives are cheap. I haven't bought one myself because I
have no desire to watch DVD movies on my PC, but you can bet the first
time a game that I want is released on DVD, I'll pony up the less than
$100 for a drive.

I seem to remember the same kind of talk when games started moving to
CD-ROM. Tell me this -- would you rather have a game with 650 megs of
data or 4.7 gigs?

Depends... how much data can those DVD units shift per sec? -What are the
access times like?

I don't want to be doing full installs of 4.7Gb games to get reasonable
loading times!

Most people do a full CD install and use a no cd crack. At 700mb a gam thats
ok With DVD at over 4 gig a game is that an option? If it is then everyone
will have to buy new hds as well. If its not an option then will there be
slow loading times that everyone complains about?

Rally Trophy and TOCA 3 DVD only?

FWIW Xbox games all come on DVD's and do not install themselves to the
hard drive.  What they do is cache data on the hard drive, and the
better ones do it so smoothly it is almost unnoticeable.  If PC game
developers would implement the same technology, what that would mean is
DVD games with huge amounts of content, no installation routine, and
negligible load times.  Sounds too good to be true, but again, Xbox
games are doing it today, with less *** hardware than you have on
your PC.

Looking at the Pro Race Driver site, I interpret it to mean the DVD ROM
is applied to both the PS2 and XBox, seeing as how it is samwiched
inbetween the two, and having nothing to do with PC, as it were.

No idea about TOCA, but I have RT, and it's definitely on a CD. Jim
Seamus' point is a good one - here in the UK, at least, the great
majority of PC games now come in DVD boxes - but I haven't seen a
single game actually on DVD in my local EB yet.

Call it copy protection...if they fill the DVD up with extra nonsense that
makes the game files larger than a cdrom can hold, they prevent the average
joe CDrom burner from copying the disk.

Personally,I think it's about time they started shipping games on DVD...

But, I'd say they aren't doing it for OUR benifit.  They are getting
something out of it.  Probably a copy-protection thing...

Using DVD snap-cases to package games and other software in is catching on.
I like the idea myself.  It saves a LOT of room, and retailers love it
because it uses far less shelf space.
