RASCAR: Daytona tactics...

by Ed Solhei » Sun, 06 Jul 2003 13:49:57

Seeing we're about to hit the superspeedways again....  I thought it might
be handy to start a little discussion/rant on race-tactics or strategy for
this type racing..

Racing superspeedways is really only about one thing... to be 'there' at
end.
The race really only start when there's about 10 laps to go...  and whatever
you've done uptil that point can really only hurt your chances of winning.
So your best bet is to be safe and stay out of trouble...

This is easier said than done, ofcourse...
I think the biggest "fear" for everyone - at tracks like these,  is to loose
the draft. So we all want to stay in the pack... and in an effort to ensure
that one do - we all end up doing real stupid things, and that's whats
causing the wrecks. And if you wreck - your day is done... the rest of the
race is just booooooooooring!

Fear number two - an almost direct consequent of fear number one - is to
loose a lap...  'cause if you loose a lap - you're f***ed! Go a lap down and
you'll have a helluffa time trying to get it back - unless the leader(s)
give it back to you..

Now,  as long as everyone got a drafting-partner, it damn hard - and I mean
damn hard, to loose a lap at track of this lenght. Especially in the short
"sprint-races" we're doing.   Even if you loose about a second a lap on the
leaders...  it will still take them around 40 laps to lap you - and then
you'll still have a chance of getting the lap back - cause you'll be at the
front of the field.  And if we were able to run 40 laps (that's 40% of the
distance) without a yellow...  - I wouldn't be writing this!

So here's an idea....
What we all really need is some sort of security to prevent us from screwing
things up...  What we all need is a drafting-partner.. a wingman if you
like.  One that would take a risk - just to help out.  It could be the guy
in front, or the guy behind you... It could even be somebody you'd teamed up
with prior to the race... one that would be willing to drop out of the
pack -  just to help you keep up the pace. The point being that as long as
two or more cars stay together - drafting - they stand a very good chance of
being there at the end - when the racing really starts!

If we all could do something like that for eachother - I think some of the
stupid stuff would be gone...  Perhaps not thins weekend - maybe next SS
race... who knows.  It sure wouldnt hurt to give it try.

So, how about it - would you lift to help a "fallen soldier"?
Would you be someone's "wingman"?

I would like to give this a try.

I tried to be Simmons' wingman last time, but it didn't work.

I have no fear of losing the draft or going a lap down, for fearing it won't
stop it from occurring.

Neither was I, didn't have the game yet. I was referring to the last time I
raced a superspeedway in RASCAR, on which occasion you were there.

I expect to be off the pace tonight if I can make it at all,
but yes, I have often given slowing down a thought even in
previous races when I was that the guy behind me was as lonely
as me and the pack disappeared into the distance.

My biggest fear in this situation though is that the guy behind
me don't play fair or doesn't realize I've slowed down to
partner up with him and just running me over straight as a
result.

I cannot chat in car very good (my TSW blocks most of the
keyboard and only has four buttons ;-), so I also have a hard
time making my intentions clear.

So for tonight, if you see the lonely mandrake car #67 in front
of you and you want to draft with me... let me know ;-)

Cheers,

uwe

Same here, if I become alone on track I will gladly slow to help someone
pick up a draft. At the end of the day, it'll benefit both of us because two
cars can run faster than one :)

That wasn't quite the thing I had in mind Ian....  What I was referring to
was if you'd drop out of a draft to help one that's falling behind?

To wait for [another] loner is one thing - but to willingly drop out of the
pack to prevent another from falling behind - it something completely
different.

Well, dan, how bout watching the movie and then give me the correct quote.
Doc Holloday (played by val kilmner) made the quote in Wyatt Earp. I thought
that he said huckaberry. I could be wrong. I got bad hearing from being
around jets engines too long.

You know what sucks? All these years I have been saying huckaberry and now I
know why people always looked at me funny. You try to be funny, and nobody
gets it because I never heard the word correctly.

Thanks Dan.

I wonder what else I said over the years that was wrong?

What would JSimmons do right now if he were me?

Don't worry about it, Dan - my favorites are Bugs Bunny cartoons...  I know
most of them by HEART. :-)
