Overheating Video card?

I recently purchased a Creative Banshee (PCI/16mb)  and installed it in my
computer.

I was running a race at the Rock last night in N99 and was suddenly booted to
windows about 30 laps into the race. The same thing happened while runnung a
race in Viper racing about a week ago.

If my video card was overheating, would the result be getting booted from the
game or should I be looking for the problem elsewhere?

I heard overheating cards caused lock ups, but I could be wrong.

Hi Adam,
It could be heat. You cannot get the inside of your computer too cool. For
systems that create a lot of heat many people have 4 or more fans, case intake,
case exhaust, cpu and video. If you need some more info e:mail me and I'll give
some sites and my experience.

I work for a computer company here in Wisconsin. When installing
Banshee's we add a 486 processor fan to the heat sink of the video
card. They have a real problem with over heating. Adding a fan to
yours will help big time.

Hi Brian,

I installed a 12mg V2 card and an SB Live recently and began to experience
lockups in GPL. With the addition of a case fan and a Voodoo Coolor from 3DFX
Cool <www.3dfxcool.com>,
I have not experienced one lockup.

Try running your machine with the cover off and a small fan blowing over the
insides. This is not as efficient as correct case and card specific fans, but
it might help.

I am using an old Toshiba tower and it appears that its time for a new one that
will give me room for a couple fans to keep everything cool.

In the mean time I'll try removing the cover and using a small portable  fan.

Thanks

I don't know if removing the cover helps or hurts- good cases are
designed with airflow in mind, and removing the cover might actually
diminish air moving over the sink. I am not an expert- I just advise
you might ask around before doing it.

Definitely pulling any lint or dust out of the computer helps though
;-)
