The key to improve your driving is to learn the race track. You have to
know in advance how the next corner looks, which gear you have to
choose, ASO. Listen to the engine sound to get a better feel for the
speed in the curves. The first laps you should slow down a little to
make sure you stay on the track. That makes it easier to learn it.
Turn on the Ideal-Line and try to follow it. I would turn all helps of
except of the one that stops you from spinning while you accelerate
(Don't know how this feature is called in the english version). Why?
Because all the helps are stopping you from getting a real feel for the
driving-model.
Put the front wing 9 steps higher than the rear wing for the beginning
(This is a good setting for getting a little better through the corners
without drifting too much). For example F:17 B:8.
Take your time learning the tracks corners and play around with your car
setups. Use the manual, it's not too bad.
That's all for the beginning, have fun!

I feel the same way.  It is an excellent sim.  I too was an arcade
racer, and never found sims to be that interesting.  I was hooked on
the demo 6 months ago.

I hope your keeping you R3D set to at least 57.  I've ran it like this
for over a year without a problem.  It's pretty damn smooth with a
Voodoo2.  :)

Did you turn damage off?  The best way to learn is to start off really
easy.  Easy Mode, all the driving aids "on", and set damage to "none".
This way you can concentrate on the track and knowing when and how
much to brake and accelerate.
I found this helped me out alot, and Im slowly increasing the
difficulty the more I race.
You may wanna run time laps or ghost laps, they are great ways to
learn the tracks and get used to handling the cars, without having to
worry about other cars getting in the way.

Hi Guybrush Threepwood
Oh no
I would say drive monza. Learn that.
In F1RS I would say the most easy and
satisfing circuits are in no order
monza, spa(alot of GP2 practice here) and nurburgring
monaco is also alot of fun.
Well I start of on the easy setting then learn the track.
Once you know the track and can anticipate the corners
you can then turn the easy settings off and start driving.
A few simple things to do *for a short fun race* are to
stick the revs up to full(17500), put on D type tyres, put about
30 in the fuel tank, bring down the ride height to about 55(dependant on
the track), bring down 5th and 6th gears a few places and go race.
This is as far as I am with F1RS at the moment but I
have forced myself to race with antiskid correction off and all the
other stuff off except for the gearchanges cause when GPL comes out
you are gonna need to know how to drive!

SOUND?? are you kidding?? are you sure you're playing the same game as i am?

The engine sound on F1RS is atrocious.. when you rev the engine noise while
on the grid it doesnt rev up smoothly, only does quantum jumps from one
engine pitch to another, its ok when your accellerating in gear, does
anyone else have this problem or is it just me?? this effect happens on
Formula 1 by psygnosis too.

also what version do you have, and is it the english or US version??

: I notice slight stutters when my R3D is set at 50hz, if I turn my R3D
: to 60, the motion is much more fluid.  If you have a high end machine

what is R3D may i ask also??

Use Monza to learn. As far as tips go, do a lot of laps, learn about
setups, do a lot of laps, learn more about setups, do............

Actually I think the sound is great as well.....certainly it doesnt
sound exactly like a F1 Car....no sim will soon...but its no where as
bad as some would make out.

I find the sound in F1RS to be quite good. The best of any F1 simulation
in fact (IMHO). Actually I guess I am glad you were not the one in
charge of the sound for this game. Who knows what we would get :-)
The only problem I have with the sound is that grating downshifting
sound you get sometimes (not every downshift). All in all I find the
sound in F1RS a big part of the suspension of disbelief (or what ever
that is).

Not a sim, of course, but the best F1 engine sound I've ever heard
was on the Sega arcade racer "Super Monaco GP".  It really captured the
low rattle that race fans hear most clearly during in-car shots.  Whether
or not this is what the driver hears from within the helmet is another
matter, though...

I have to agree with papadoc and gcisko on this one. At first I thought F1RS
sounded a bit strange, I was used to the GP2 sounds. But  when I ran the sim
during the OZ race I realized how close it sounds to the real cars. If
anything, a real F1 car has a more staccatto edge to it. The sim starts to
sound better the smoother you drive, give it time. It really helps to have a
sub-woofer or connect your sound card to your home stereo like I have! I hope
my new neighbors are F1 fans!

Yeah, but the volume is not proportional to throttle application!

One of the most striking things about my first races attended were the
sounds. Matter of fact I wasnt going to be able to afford going to see
my first Formula 1 Race because I was broke and the tickets were oh so
damn expensive. hehhehe....Well the first day of practice at Las Vegas
and Im working about 2 blocks from the track.....they started up for
the first practice and a chill went up my back....(turbo days)....and
I went and got my ticket....I will be extremely surprised when a sim
captures that....and I will be buying it. The sounds or lack of
were/are one of my biggest gripes with Indy Car...where is the
overrun..????

Frankly I haven't noticed. I guess I am too busy driving and thinking
how good the game sounds :-) I am constantly amazed at the amount
if complaints to the Nth degree we have here. I am totally convinced
that if the game were "fixed" as you would like, someone else would
come here to complain about something else. It never ends.
