NASCAR: ARGH! Black Flags for exceeding 55 in pit, bug?!?!

by Pigdog from SF B » Tue, 28 May 1996 04:00:00

HI, everyone.  I'm new to Nascar and have only been racing for about
a month or two now, and I have a problem that is buggy me to death.
I don't know how many times this has happened so far, but a LOT for
sure:  I'm in a race, and doing very, very well, when I decide to pit
for some gas and maybe get my hood pounded down a little so I can
see a little better.  I come in fast at about 9 billion miles per hour,
and do a screeching skid into my pit stall.  My boys fix me up in no
time, and then I'm ready to hit the track again.  NOT!  I do an ALT-B
to keep my speed under 55 in the pit, and then floor it out to the track,
but auto-braking keeps my speed AT or UNDER 55mph until I reach the track
at which point I do another ALT-B to give me manual control over braking
so I can take those turns at 700mph.

The big problem here, is that when I come BACK AROUND to the starting line
I frequently get an "Exceeded 55mph in the pit area" and a black flag!
ARGH!  Race is ruined!  The thing is, I did NOT exceed 55mph in the pit!

Is this a bug?  Any work-arounds?  The only thing I can think of (this
just came to me) is that maybe I'm coming INTO the pit too fast?  But
why doesn't it register as soon as I'm detected going over 55?  Why
does it tell me the next time I go around the track?  GAR!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Here's your problem  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^.

The speed limit is enforced on both the entry and exit from pit road.
Make sure that you are at or below 55 before you enter.  As far as the
timing of the flag, thats just how it works I'm afraid.

hour,

AH ha...You have slow down to 55 BEFORE you enter pit row. Also alt-B
doesn't always work, sometime it will let your car get to 56 or 57mph
if you keep the gas down and you'll get a flag for that too. Take a
little bit of time in a practice or preseason test session and just run
down pit row a few times to get the feel for driving 55mph it'll save
you a little frustration.

You have to stay under the speed limit both going into and leaving the
pits. The speed limit is enforced from the start of the pit wall to the end
of the pit wall, except at Talladega, where there is no pit wall.

Snip!

Hey Pigdog,

You sound like you're breaking the sound barrier coming into the pit, which is
probably where you're picking up the black flag...

Nice handle, by the way... :)

David

This is a  common mistake made by most drivers of all levels of
experience. The speed limit zone ends once you pass the front of the pace
car not the pit wall. At Atlanta the the pace car sits beyond the end of
pit row. If you accellarate after the end of pit wall but before the
front of the pace car you will be awarded the BLACKFLAG.

Not always...  Usually if I speed into the pits, it tells me the next time I
pass the start/finish line - ie. while I'm still in pit lane.

Even with braking help ON, you can still put the car several MPH over 55 if
you have the accelerator to the floor in the pits.  The best solution is to
learn how to slow the car down yourself and keep the speed below 55.  This
simulation requires practice and patience, and you should try to use it
with all driving aids turned off, in order to achieve the best results.

Yeah, I should've mentioned that. But more often than not, you pit under
yellow and the pace car isn't there. On most tracks, the end of the pit
wall works just fine. Atlanta and Talladega are the only two exceptions I
can think of.

When I play, auto-braking will sometimes allow 56mph to occur and
sure enough I'll get a black flag.  So, I don't think you can rely
completely upon auto-braking.

I also have the problem that even tho the auto braking is on, it
sometimes goes over 55 to 56.  I then cop a black flag even tho the auto
brake is on.  It is at the stage where I csn't trust the auto brake, so I
have to stay well below and lose time.

Anyone else have this problem???

I usually accelerate once my car has cleared the first pitstall.  I'm
usually going 54mph when I floor it and I don't get blackflagged.  I
haven't noticed where the pace car is.  Maybe there should be a special
topdown view of the track that highlights where the speedtrap is.  Or at
least have lines painted visibly on the track surface.

I would still call it a bug however, that the autobraking is supposed to
keep you under the speed limit and it doesn't.  It may not be as
authentic as braking your self, but when someone is learning to drive the
sim they usually cheat a bit.  And this means that they will more often
than not get blacked flagged in the pits.   Is this a bug and is there a
fix for it???
