DirectX 6 question

by Richard Busc » Sat, 09 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I have DX 6 core files installed on my PC. When I check them with dxdiag
I see that many of my DXfiles are uncertified. My question is should I
install the full DX6eng files? Would this make all my DX6 files
certified? Is there any problems with the full DX6 files? I run GPL
almost exclusively and would like to know if this would***up GPL.

I figure the uncertified files are from my SB Live and my Diamond
Monster 2 3D and my Permidia.

Thanks for any informative answers.

Richard,

I am using Windows 98 with the downloaded DirectX6 patch from Microsoft. I
have experienced no problems running GPL with it fully installed.

Yes, I think the files from other companies (SBL,Diamond etc.)may be
uncertified. They probably didn't want to wait for MS to certify them, but I
dont think it really makes a difference. The DX6 files will work except it
changes the Glide2x.dll file in the C:\Windows\System directory for the M3d
2 and can cause the game to lock up. There is an easy fix that will allow
you to use the old Glide2x.dll for GPL and the new file for other games.
Here is an e-mail I got from Sierra:

This does not seem to occur on all systems, so it is very difficult to
pinpoint why it is happening. We have been able to resolve this for several
customers via the following workaround.

Get the Voodoo 2 reference drivers (NOT THE DIRECTX 6 DRIVERS) from 3DFX
.com http://www.racesimcentral.net/
(Voodoo2 Release 2.1)
Open the file with Winzip (or the zip utility of your
choice) and extract the GLIDE2X.DLL file to your GPL
directory.(C:\Sierra\GPL\ )

Please let us know if you need any further assistance, and include any
previous messages with your reply.

Thank You,

Thanks Lutrell. That was what I was looking for. I had read the other
posts on this subject (putting glide2x.dll in GPL folder), and already
have done this. Later today I do the deed. I hope it works out.
