ICR2 - Rendition

ICR2 - Rendition

by Gary Wample » Wed, 10 Oct 2001 09:19:45

I've suddenly got a hankering to run the Rendition version of ICR2.  I have
a Herc Thriller, which uses the Rendition Verite V2200 chip.  A while back a
tried to make the Rendition version work, but once I went thru the
recommended steps and finally got it to work, it was not stable & crashed
alot.
I see some old magazine (97) adverti***ts for a Intergraph Intense 3D 100
video card which came bundled with the Rendition version of ICR2 and I
believe used an earlier generation Verite V1000 chip.

My questions:

1) Where can I find the Rendition version of ICR2?  I've seen the
Icr2_v2k.zip and Icr2rend.zip patches, but they seem to be patches to the
original Rendition ICR2 and not include everything. I have the original Dos
ICR2, w/ installation CD, etc.

2) Is there a way to successfully run Rendition ICR2 with my 2nd generation
Verite V2220 vid card, and make it stable?

3) If not, which old V1000 video card do you recommend for ICR2?   The ones
I've heard of are: Intergraph Intense 3D 100, Canopus Total 3d, Sierra
Screamin' 3d.

Thanks!

1) That's a tough one unless someone wants to sell their copy.

2) I used to run ICR2-3D on both a Diamond Stealth S220 and a Genoa VRaptor
without issue. It's been a while though and I remember I had to download
some "fixes" from a website that tricked ICR2 into thinking it was running
on a V1000 chip.

3) I had one of the original Intense 3D 100's and it worked great for ICR2.

There's the Creative Labs 3D Blaster (PCI) as well.

You can't go wrong with a 1st gen Rendition card.  The 2nd gen Herc
Thriller and V2200 Diamond Stealth II's had to use mulitple gimmicks to get
the 3d ICR2 to run.
FWIU ICR2 is totally out of print, even in the multiple game packages
Sierra often puts out.  Finding a copy will be tough but there used to be
some pages on Eagle Woman's website the decribed exactly which version you
need to get that included the 3d.  (Cart Racing is the title, but there were
several printings, some had the Rendition version, some didn't.)
So first finding an original Rendition card will be tough...finding
drivers probably also problematic.  Then getting the 3d version.  Finally
running in dos mode.  Most of the latest Windows version either don't have
dos or try to ignore it.   Your best bet would be finding a used Pentium
system about 200mmx would be plenty fast, with dos and win95 installed.
Keep in mind the soundcard should also be Soundblaster Pro compatible with
the irq and dma settings of  irq 5, dma 3, & the last setting 1.
  Two easier solutions?
Get the windows version.  It is NOT 3d and looks pretty crappy, but you
get all of the ICR2 funtionality and it runs fairly stable.  2.  There is a
patch for converting Nascar3 to run the ICR2 bodies.(it's a hack and not a
conversion, so you still drive Winston Cup cars...but the Illusion is there)
This site has more info...

I have a copy of "CART RACING" which has the DOS Rendition version.  I used it
with a Diamond Stealth II card.  There were several tricks that had to be done
to make it work, but it was well worth it as I remember.  I believe the Canopus
V1000 card was the best of the lot.  Seems like you should be able to find the
program on EBay easy enough.  Not sure about the video card though, probably all
in the trash by now.  Too bad.

says...

You want the PC Gamer Editors' Choice Collection put out by Sierra.
It includes CART Racing with the Windows, DOS, and Rendition versions of the
game.  (How do I know?  I have it.)  It is still for sale at a few places.
I'll give you some links:

http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/sierraed.htm

http://www.dcsintl.net/scripts/ProdDetl.idc?sQkey=&Product_code=CD25051

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/tjsinc/edchoiccolfi.html

The third link is the cheapest.  I know I've seen it elsewhere as
well, including at many local stores.

And I got my copy working fine with my Stealth S220, though I'm not
sure where to get the patches anymore.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Damn - I just threw away a Diamond Stealth...  I figured no one would need
one...
