F1 2001 and Voodoo3 problem

by Zen » Sun, 03 Mar 2002 13:24:03

Hi

I'm trying to run F1 2001 but it tells me that I need DirectX 8 video
drivers. But they are installed, and dxdiag tells me things are ok. I have a
Voodoo 3000 with some latest patch. I run XP pro, Athlon 1600+, 256 DDR
DIMM, etc . Any idea why I can't run it?

Thanks

Voodoo3 cards do not have enough texture memory.  16megs won't do anymore.
I think It is mentioned in the readme file that V3's are not supported.

F1 2001 and Voodoo3 problem

Hi,

Well, I have this flight sim, Il-2 (Ubisof), more recent than F1 2001,
better graphics and more details, and it runs smooth as baby's bottom on
this V3 although it "only" has 16 megs.

It think its another case of a game poorly designed.

Thanks!

from EA Sports F1 2001 website, the requirements...

Operating System Microsoft Windows 95,98, ME, 2000, XP
Processor 333 Mhz or better Intel Pentium II or 100% Compatible
Memory 64MB RAM
Hard Drive 250MB
CD/DVD Drive 4x CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive
Video card 16MB Direct3D video card (MUST be DirectX 8.0 compatible)
Sound Card Direct X 8.0 compatible
Game Controllers Direct X 8.0 compatible
Multiplayer TCP/IP compliant (2-8 Players)

Now, why wouldn't V3 work?

F1 2001 requires DirectX 8.0 compatible video drivers.

Since the Voodoo 3 is a 4 year old piece of hardware made by a now
defunct company, there aren't any DX8 compatible drivers for it.

The last time I checked, taking advantage of the latest hardware and
software isn't "bad programming".  I could accuse the developers of
Grand Theft Auto 3 for bad programming because their product won't run
on my Atari 2600 and it's just as relevant.

Ya, you're right, I got e***d for nothing.

Still, DXdiag tells me the video car is working in directX 8.1, so I don't
understand why F1 won't agree with it. But then again, its obviously more
complicated than that.

Any recommendations regarding which video card I should get and that will
last me another 4 years?

Good luck.  I've gotten into the habit of buying the 2nd best video
card and just replacing it every 6-12 months.  Using a Geforce 3 Ti200
now but more than likely going to get a Geforce 4 Ti4600 and try to
keep myself satisfied with that for a short while.

So, to answer question, I have no idea. =p

Ah - continuous consumption based on planned obsolescence...  The retailers
LOVE you for that... :)
