Moving from Logitech WFF to Momo - registry questions

by David A. Ewin » Mon, 14 Jan 2002 04:44:39

For all you guys who went from a Logitech Wingman Formula Force to a MOMO,
did you have to do any registry cleanup?  I just uninstalled my LWFF and its
software, but when I looked in the registry, there were still DOZENS of
registry entries for the LWFF, the Profiler and many other Logitech devices
(that I don't own).  Is it safe to just leave the registry alone and install
the MOMO or should I go through the laborious (and dangerous) process of
trying to purge the registry.

Thanks in advance,

Dave Ewing

I went from Formula Force to momo without any problems. I did download the
latest drivers from the Logitech site due to a bug in GPL. But I still use
both wheels connected via usb for Colin McRae 2 dual screen.

Yep. Installed the newest Wingman drivers and hooked up the wheel.
No problems. I suppose that's one nice thing about having one driver
setup for all of a companies controllers. I don't use the Profiler.

Takes a bit of getting used to and you will have to tweak your settings
again, but it's infinately "crisper" than the LWFF IMO. I consider it a
major improvement.

The MOMO as a unit feels more solid and higher in quality due to lack
of slop, but I still feel the gear drive is inferior to the original's
cable drive.

Also, although the new wheel is leather covered, it's hard as a rock
which makes it feel very "plasticy" compared to the originals soft
*** cover. Not saying the *** was better than leather, but a
layer of dense padding under the leather would have led to a much more
quality feel.

Overall, I think the MOMO is a good wheel, but it should have beat the
original in every way, which it doesn't.

Probably the bean counters got in the way of another product that had great potential in its design
stages yet had to be compromised for production.

Thanks for all the input.  After checking out the registry, it became
obvious that Logitech puts in all the information for all their MANY
controllers whenever you install their software.  So even if I had cleaned
out the registry, virtual everything would have re-appeared upon installing
the Momo.  My wheel was even shipped with the latest 4.11c software.

I have done very little testing as of yet - I need to tweak the settings in
my core.ini (GPL) file to get the forces I like, but my initial reaction is
that it is very nice.  There is no play in the spindle, which as Tim
mentioned, makes it feel very solid.

I really like the leather covered wheel.  Tim is right, though, it is much
harder, but I don't think that makes it feel or look cheap in any way.  Just
the opposite.  It might be a little less comfortable than the softer LWFF
for long lessions and/or if you grip the wheel too tight.

I like the six buttons. This gives you the same number of settings as the
four-button LWFF (if you used one of the four as a "shift" (not gear-shift)
button), but is easier to use.

The F1-style shifter paddles are metal, as opposed to black plastic on the
LWFF and look like the real thing.

The housing for both the wheel and the pedal base are the same size as the
LWFF.  I've always liked their clamping mechanism (if you have the room
under you desk).  I left my LWFF on my desk for over two years and never
even had to tighten it.

I'm still undecided on the pedals.  Their travel is the same as on the LWFF
(i.e., too short). However, they now have a pivot (like the old T2 pedals)
and they have a nicer shape.  The resistance is also firmer, which is an
improvement.  I think I will have to try the squash ball trick on the brake
pedal, though, to prevent lock-ups.  (I was using CH pedals with my LWFF for
those sims that supported multiple controllers).

As for the force effect -- as I said I haven't set it up yet to really test
it properly.  Does anybody have any settings for GPL that they really like
as a starting point?  Note: I just have a 400MHz machine, which might make a
difference.   Unfortunately, my machine isn't up to running F1 2001, so that
is a moot point.

And has anybody put on the cheesy yellow lightning bolt decals?  ;-)

Thanks,

Dave Ewing

No problems here. I have 3 Logitech controllers (LWFF, Momo and Wingman
Extreme) plugged into one usb hub and select which I want to use in the
software.

I'd forgotten those were in the box!

I'm gonna put 'em on my guitar.
