I'm having trouble getting my hands on these wheels to try out so
which would you recommend? I hear the Logitec pedals are a bit dodgy and the
Actlab
paddles don't sound too good.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

I have the Logitech, one big reason I could actually see one at the local
Best Buy (never have seen an ACT Labs in person).  I really, really like it,
and don't have a problem with the pedals.  I'm starting to think a big thing
with the pedals is whether you wear shoes or not when sim-racing.  I never
have, always bare feet or with socks, for extra control (and since my old CH
Pedals didn't quite fit my size 10 Reeboks <grin>)  Without shoes, the
Logitech pedals seem fine to me - but when messing around for a few minutes
waiting to go somewhere yesterday with the shoes on they indeed felt like
they had no travel or tension.  I think the way they're designed to go down
into the base makes going "shoeless" mandatory, too much weight on them for
the springs with shoes on, and not enough feel / travel with shoes on.

So if you already go shoeless, or wouldn't mind doing so, give the Logitech
a try.  You can with some workarounds run CH Pedals or the like on the
gameport in conjunction with the wheel if you really hate the pedals, but I
think they get somewhat of a bad rap - I can control brake lockup better in
GPL with these than my previous TM NASCAR Pro pedals (good travel, lots of
tension) or  Mad Catz Andretti pedals (huge amount of travel, little
tension) - and have the better lap times to prove it. :-)

The ActLabs paddles do blow chunks, but their pedals are excellent.  The
Logitech has great paddles, and the pedals are OK with a "fix".  I felt the
RS wheel was too thick and uncomfortable.  The LWFF is molded beautifully.
You can add on the RS shifter in the future, and the RS can be used on an
N64, PSX, Dreamcast, etc, with extra cartridges.

<snipped stuff about driving and socks<g>>

Last week I removed the wiring harness from my LWFF pedals and used it to
rewire my CH pedals. I think I finally have the perfect Force Feedback
wheel. Lockup and wheelspin are much easier to control, and I'm now able to
trailbrake with some consistancy.

I tried the Logitech pedals for 7 months, but reached a point where I felt
they were holding me back, and now after a week, I'm glad I made the switch.
I know this works with TM pedals as well and if anyone wants help with the
conversion, let me know.

I wired up my old T2 pedals to the LWFF, big difference! I'm racing like I
was before the LWFF. Can't wait for FF in GPL!

What is this fix you're talking about?  I just got myself a Logitech
Wingman FF wheel, and although I thought the pedals were satisfactory,
my barefoot feet get sore after a while...  Is it a fix to reduce
tension, or what?

Thanks, --Mountain K

The easiest thing to do is to replace the pedal springs with stiffer ones.
The springs are simple coils and are easy to find in local hardware stores.
There are ten screws under the Logitech pedals, remove them and seperate the
two halves, noting the placement of the cables, pedals and springs. It's
actually a very simple design, you can't really mess it up. Take the springs
with you to the hardware store and look for something similar in diameter
and made of thicker wire but not so thick that the spring binds before the
pedal reaches full travel.  Don't worry about the length, they can be cut to
size. I used a slightly thicker wire under the brake pedal for a more
natural feel.
