Worst Racing Games!!

by Chris Bloo » Tue, 29 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Well seeing as there is a topic regarding favourite racing games
going at the moment, I was wondering what everybody regards as
the worst racing game they have had tried?

I have built up quite a colection of racing games/sims over the
last few years.  Okay, I have NFS 3 and Screamer 2.  Are they
really that bad though?  The graphics on the former are pretty
cool and it is fun to race an opponent on a single machine.  It
is also alot more forgiving than GPL after a dozen beers!).  No
for what they are and pretend to be those games are alright.

The worst racing game I have bought was Test Drive 4x4!  Oh this
looks good I thought!  Trying to manouvre a Landy through mud
and over rocks (seeing as I have experiance of 4x4 off-road
driving), quite a challenge I thought!  Well was i dissapointed
or what?  The real sad thing is that I bought it the same day as
GPL, really spoilt the occasion:(

Hot Rod Harry...!  hands down....

and a real close 2nd would be some hunk of ***I can't remember the
name of... maybe Back Road Racers...? you had to race down some
squirrel trail dirt road to the track you were going to race on...
<ummm, ok..> only software I think I've ever actually returned -
exchanged it for Virtual Karts (Microprose) which wasn't anything
spectacular, but I did at least get a kick out of it for a while....
if hadn't been for the excruciating load times, it might have actually
stayed on the HD

~yeah, I know I probably went a little too far back and digging UNDER
the sludge at the bottom, but when you said "worst racing games" I had
flashbacks...

Worst Racing Games!!

Well I've seen a few duds over the years.  OF1R after all the hype turned out
sour (but not horrible), ABC Indy Racing wasnt quite up to***(but was OK
after alot of setup tuning), then theres the usual assortment of bargin bin
specials that you can get maybe a weeks worth of fun out of then they become
drink coasters.  But the worst example of a so called "racing sim" HAS to be
NasRev.  That is the ONLY game I have ever returned.  It was a total flop after
all the media hype saying it would be a (then) N2/99 beater.  It didnt even
beat N1!!!!!  It had good graphics but thats about it...and the graphics were
choppy anyways so what good is eye candy if it cant run smoothly.  Thats the
biggest flp I've ever owned....but im sure there are worse.

For the biggest disapointment, I think it was called Manx Racers. I was
hoping it was going to give me the Isle of Man, in the same way GPL
delivered the gift of the Nurburgring, but it was just arcade crap.

That one was indeed vile... I think I'll go with that one as well. Wasn't a
fun arcade game either.

Screamer 2 is appreciated by many people here for the entertainment it
gives, even if it doesn't take itself seriously.  It's probably the best
title to have fun drifting and powersliding into the corners.

As for the worst racing games.. for me there is too many to list.  Worst for
me is a title that had potential, was hyped and failed it's hype.  C:PR,
SoS, any NASCAR title by EA, Prost GP, etc..

I don't consider F1RS and MGPRS2 as worst racing games, FYI :)

I guess non of you have had the mispleasure of Sega Touring Car
Championship, where you could park your car on a banked corner and watch it
slid to the inside of the track. Anything you can think of from handling to
steering to graphics was bad. Come to think of it, they never sent my $20
rebate, even after several unanswered emails. I keep the cd near my table
with a note on it that says "Never Again!!".

Thank goodness for demos, they've kept me from buying some real stinkers
like Andretti Racing (those Andretti's will put their name on anything for a
buck...),OF1R and Spirit of Speed. The worst driving game I own, NFS
III...yeech<g>.

A piece of good advice seems to be avoid any game which is
endorsed by a driver/team in its title!

John Bodi

Worst Racing Games!!

I think I've got you ALL beat -- I had a $19.99 item to return to CompUSA
and it was beyond their 15-day return period, so I couldn't get a cash
refund.  They were gracious enough to let me exchange it for a
similarly-priced item, so I picked up "Swamp Buggy Racing" from Wizard
Works.  Heck, I've seen Swamp Buggies on Speedvision, and I really wanted to
help encourage Wizard Works to produce more great racing games like Dirt
Track Racing, so I picked up Swamp Buggy Racing -- and BOY is it BUGGY!  The
graphics are REALLY blocky (but fast), the lighting is pretty neat, but the
gameplay is, uh, limited, and there are some problems with non-Soundblaster
(Creative Labs) sound cards, so this rinky-dink little game locks up my
system EVERY time, and there's no real fix short of a new sound card (to
which I say NO WAY, not for this game!).

Beyond the lockups, though, Swamp Buggy Racing actually has LESS going for
it than the Dirt Track Racing DEMO.  Very disappointing, considering how
promising it looks.  I'd love to see more driving/racing stuff from Daylight
Productions (the developer) AND from Wizard Works, but I hope they both put
more work into it in the future.
