T2 Adapter ?'s

T2 Adapter ?'s

by JL » Wed, 27 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I plan on buying a T2 by Xmas, & a switchbox so I don't have to crawl
behind the computer to change joysticks, etc.
Today I went to my local PC store inquiring about the T2 & the
"Joyswitch" switchbox.  Clerk there told me this wouldn't solve my
problem totally because some sims require the use of an adapter & some
don't. I'd still have to crawl behind the computer.  He said I would
instead have to use 2 switchboxes (one a 2 switch box & one a 4 switch -
he doesn't sell the Joyswitch box).  I would then plug the pedals into
the wheel & run the wheel into the 2 switch box & run two cables out
(one with the adapter & one without) to the 4 switch box.  Then I can
hook my other joysticks, etc. into the 4 switch box.  This should allow
me to play any of the auto sims.
Does this sound right?  I don't plan to use this setup for any flight
sims, only racing sims such as Nascar2 & Monster Truck Madness; maybe
others.  I want the easiest set up possible so I never have to crawl
behind the computer to change things.
Also, does anyone know how long the cords are on the T2?  Are they long
enough to move it out of the way when I'm not using it? (I don't have
much room on my computer desk).
Any advise would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Exactly what type of adapter are we referring to? Adapter can mean many things
to many people.

Nope. I would hold out for a JOYSWITCH. Also, I would not ask that guy to
setup your stuff :-) I suspect the real problem is that they don't sell
JOYSWITCH.

FWIW, I have a T2, TM-FCS, TM-WCS-II & TM-RCS. I will have to somehow hook
all of this stuff together so that I won't be going behind the computer
either. So far the JOYSWITCH is the only solution I would consider.

I had the same problem. I have a tower PC which is underneath a desk
and is difficult to move. Instead of getting a switch box (which might
not have all pins connected) why not buy or make an extra long
extension cable ? This will certainly be cheaper than a switchbox and
will allow you to easily plug in whatever equipment you want. If you
buy a cable make sure that all the pins are wired up. I bought one and
was assured by the shop I bought it from that all the pins were wired
up only to get it home and find out they weren't and thus it was
useless with my T2. If you can handle a soldering iron without
injuring yourself (and I can't - so I got a friend to do this :) then
you can make yourself a long cable very cheaply indeed.

I hope this helps a bit :)

T2 Adapter ?'s

by Phil Bowe » Fri, 29 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Hellooooo out there.

I have a T2 control and I can tell U that any ***about an adapter is
BUNK.  Thrustmaster sends U an adapter that switches the Axes on the
control for calibration purposes.  It does NOTHING to the way U play your
games....  Buy an ACM Game Card (TM) with the unit and You'll be hapier
with the calibration of the controls.  Using Thrustmasters ACM You will
never get a "Recalibrate Your Joystick" when starting any games because the
CARD sets the limits on the values returned by your controls and they are
very consistant.

Length of cords.  LONG.  Mine to the Wheel is a little over 7'.  The pedals
I'm not going under my desk to measure but I seem to remember they are
longer them being longer than that.  They are at least equal length.  Mine
route thru my desk to the floor from my computer (Tower) on top of the
corner cabinet of my desk 4' from my monitor and have room to spare.  My
wheel comes up over my desk and gets run back over again for storage with
cable to spare.

The Adapter refered to does this.
From Thrustmaster Your wheel is Joystick 1 X Axis, Your pedals are JS2 Y
Axis. The adapter changes this to Wheel J1X, Pedals J1Y.  Thats all.  Set
up your games to work like either arrangment and your fine.  Using the
adapter is simply a matter of choice.  I use it only so I can calibrate on
the first JS cal screen and skip the second.  Matter of choice.

Just a hint.  If you are on carpet,  take a 2x4 sitting flat and cut a slot
in it on a tablesaw at about a 12 Deg angle about 5/8" deep.  wrap 2 peices
of *** band over the lip on the front of your T2 pedals and stuff it in
the slot.  Using 2 nails driven through the 2x4 and sticking out about 3/8
to 1/2 inch, You can have something the hold the controls in place on
carpet without harming your floor and raise the front of them up to be at a
more compfortable angle.

If you want a drawing of what I mean, send mail.

On the swotch,  A buddy of mine has a Joyswitch as U mentioned.  He has a
T2,  Sidewinder3D Pro, The full TM Flight system with rudder controls & TQS
and has NO problem in any game.  The only thing is , in 95 there is only
one device that may be active and changing devices means recalibrating.
This is one area that nobody at Microsoft should have gotten a raise for.
Play DOS games in DOS mode and they'lll all keep their own setups for
whatever control You wish to play.  I just use driving games but He uses
the T2 for racing,  the SW3d for Mech2, Flight control stuff for flying and
a SpaceOrb for Descent and such.  Never has to ReSetup.

Good luck!

The guy at the local store You spoke to gets a Spiff on every switchbox he
special-orders and double spiffs on special cables.. lol.
