Old T2 with/without adapter?

Old T2 with/without adapter?

by Tim -fusio » Thu, 08 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I've been reading the posts about having the gas and brakes on a
separate axis.
I have an old T2 from back when they came with the adapter for Win95
to make the wheel/pedals single axis.

I've been using it thinking that I had to with Win95?
I'm now using OSR2, and although it has a control option for T2
without adapter, I never tried it.
I gather this works OK now, unlike the original version of 95?

The separate axis would probably be cool for SODA as well as GPL.

Old T2 with/without adapter?

This doesn't really provide a separate axis.  I have a T2 as well, and
the the gas and brake are always on the same axis - there is no way of
separating the two.

What the adapter does it to make the steering wheel, the pedals and the
four buttons (shift up/down as buttons) all work on one joystick.
Without the adapter the wheel and two of the buttons work as one
joystick and the pedals plus the other two buttons work as another
joystick.  Some games (Europress' Rally game comes to mind) would only
recognise one joystick and therefore could only be played with the
adapter (they may have changed this later).

Unfortunately, with the T2 the pedal and gas are always linked on the
same axis  - it's a hardwiring thing.  Pressing full on the gas, then
pressing on the brake acts as if the gas is being lifted off and should
come to a neutral position (one cancels the other out).  This means no
heel and toe in GPL :(.

Cheers,
Gian.

Hi Tim,

The adapter is to move the pedals from joystick 2 axis to joystick 1.
Some games would not see the pedals on the 2nd joystick, the adapter
fixes that.

It has nothing to do with separate axis for brake and gas.
You have to do some rewiring to get separate axis for brake
and gas.

Jason.

   Not quite the same thing.

The old T2 had the steering on joystick axis X1 (x axis of joystick
1), gas and brake on axis X2 (or Y2, I forget).  Unfortunately, the
wizards at MS decided to set up Win 95 to mis-understand a joystick
with only one axis, and Win95 will not see any other joysticks if the
first stick has only one axis. :(  So Thrustmaster created a simple
adapter that moved gas/brake from X2 (or Y2) to Y1, so everything was
on joystick one and Win95 was happy (and that's why everyone calls it
a "Win95 adapter").

What is beneficial to GPL is having the gas and brake on separate,
independent axes, such as gas on Y1 and brake on X2.  The TM NASCAR/F1
wheels have switches to achieve that.  The old T2 requires extensive
re-wiring to do so, look at Wally's or Lew's wheel sites for info.

Thanks for the heads-up on this guys.
I wasn't really clear on what the adapter did, or how the T2 used the
stick axi's.

I've had it a couple of years. Guess maybe its about wheel shopping
time. :)

Direct X 5 or Thrustmaster ProPanel enables Windows 95 games to work with
the T2 without the adapter.  You are given the choice when setting up the
T2 in the Windows 95 control panel.  I use mine without the adapter all
the time now--no changing between DOS N2 and Win95 GPL.
