GPL: D3D: Menu corruption/artifacts

by Marc Collin » Sat, 17 Feb 2001 14:15:48

Hi all:

I upgraded my GeForce2 drivers to the Detonator 3 series, to aid in N4 frame
rates.  Now I have the dreaded menu corruption in GPL.  The in-game graphics
are fine.  I had this problem eons ago with a Voodoo card.  Who out there is
running GPL in D3D with the Det 3 drivers and not getting this problem?  Are
they card manufacturer specific drivers?  Is there one of the about 2,300
adjustments that affects this problem?

Thanks,

Marc.

Do you mean the flashing menus?

Hi Mark,

Do you have VSYNC disabled in D3D?  I believe this is the problem.  See one
of the above posts on how to disable it in D3D, or write me.  Good Luck,

Already disabled...this corruption only occurs in the menu screens.

I guess there is a bit of flashing, but it basically messes up the menu
graphics wherever your mouse is when the menu is first displayed.  Sometimes
you get other corruption when you move the mouse.  Once into the game (where
there is no mouse), there is no problem.

N4 does the same thing, but not quite so bad.  It can be eliminated by
choosing the "use software cursor" option.

I only get that if I turn on FSAA, and only in one of the FSAA settings, the
"2x2 special" mode.  Certainly without FSAA the menus always look fine in
GPL, apart from when they occasionally start flashing.  With the flashing
though, the mouse doesn't leave trails, and the problem is fixed by going to
the next or previous menu.  Sounds like you have a different problem.

If you're using FSAA, try a different setting.  If you're not using FSAA,
try a fresh install of GPL.  Needless to say, you shouldn't be getting this
problem.  I've run GPL with 6.18, 6.34, 6.47 and 6.50 all without the
problem you describe.

Other things to try - check you don't have any previous video card driver
files*** about (not always easy to do) - check the d3d settings for the
card are on default - check you have the right lines in your core.ini for
d3d - check the bios settings related to the agp slot are right (check
'cache video bios' and 'cache video ram' are off, and agp aperture is at
least 32MB).

Sorry it took a while to reply, my news server is unreliable.
