GIVING UP on GPL

by Sinj » Wed, 09 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I've pretty much given up hope of ever running GPL on my new system.
I keep reading from lots of people who SAY they are running GPL on
their GEFORCE systems but when I ask HOW they don't respond.

If anyone would care to share the SECRET I will keep GPL on my system
for a few more weeks; meanwhile I will keep on racing SCGT and Viper.
These games aren't voodoo-prejudice and look and run great on the
GEFORCE256.

And yes I've tried the 1.2 patch and the GLBETA2 patch and the game
still locks up as soon as I enter the screen with the pit area in the
corner disabling my entire system leaving me with no recourse but to
turn off the power.

Wow, you sound pretty desperate here. You're not the only one who's
having problems with the Geoforce, I've read lots of complaints with
this card, and not only with GPL. That's the reason why I still have
my Voodoo II SLI.
Ok, this didn't help much, sorry for that, just hoping that you will
solve your problems, it would be a shame if you gave up on GPL because
of this problem. Have you tried asking around at the VROC chat?
Most people there are also quite willingly to help. There must be
someone out there who can help you with your problems!

Good luck,
Andre

Based on your post it sounds like a 3d rendering problem (menu's work fine
crashes the minute 3d is rendered). This _could_ be caused either by
openGL.dll not being found OR the .ini file trying to load 3dfx.dll(?)
first. First thing, make sure openGL.dll is in sierra/gpl directory, then
edit .ini file to make openGL.dll the last renderer used (also, delete the
3dfx.dll(?) renderer).  If this doesn't work: What exact system do you have
and what software are you running. My suggestion would be to disable your
sound card (in control panels/system/...) and see if that is the problem. If
the sound card is not the problem, try any nic cards you might have, etc.
Then, try the video card: uninstall your video card, make sure there are no
old drivers (add/remove programs and look for old video software then check
registry for voodoo/tnt/ati etc. and remove them--be careful with registry
changes if you don't know what you are doing find someone who does also back
up your registry before making any changes). Set computer on vga mode reboot
and reinstall the latest drivers from nvidia. Finally, uninstall GPL and
then reinstall full install, upgrade to patch 1.2 (make sure you get patch
from reputable site) and then add openGL patch. Then check the openGL
settings in the device driver (settings/advanced/...) and make sure block
transfer mode is selected and none of the other boxes are checked (you might
try experimenting here). Also, download a starup manager (like the one for
ZDBench99) and disable all startup programs. If it is possible to get GPL
running with a barebones setup you can then add programs until you find the
killer one. Again, the first time you run GPL edit the .ini file to tell GPL
that the last renderer used was openGL.dll and make sure that openGL.dll is
in the right directory(i think this is in the readme.) I don't know what
you've tried so my apologies if you've gone through this troubleshooting
already.

Best of luck.

I am running at 36 fps (except at race startup) at 1024x768 with a geforce
and a p3-600 (450 oc), SBLive Platinum, Linksys PCI nic card, 196 megs of
ram.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH DOING ANYTHING I SUGGEST. I AM NOT

I had the same kind of problems with my TNT2 (Diamond Viper 770 Ultra). It kept
locking up until I changed display drivers. In my case the Diamond drivers were
at fault. I switched to reference drivers from nVidia (www.nvidia.com) and the
problem disappeared. I've tried several versions since then as nVidia is
releasing new versions often, and sometimes a newer version is NOT, I repeat
NOT, an improvement (both in framerate and stability). Currently the most recent
version is 3.76 (haven't tried this version yet).

All I can say, invest some time in trying out various versions of the drivers
and you'll problably strike gold on the way.

I also experiencd hard crashes with my Geforce, but that was during races.
My problems were solved by entering the BIOS, and set the AGP speed to 1/1
af the FSB speed.

When your initial problem is solved,  there is the issue of mirrors. When
that problem appears, just post a quistion again, and you will get the
solution.

BTW. I also have V2 SLI, but I'm not using it. It is beinng outperformed by
the Geforce.

Thanks for the suggestions.  One post gave me the idea to try disabling my cards
AGP support and the cars actually appeared in the pit and I heard all the
engines idling but the hourglass just froze over the green light and I had to
power off.

This leads me to believe it could be an openGL setting.  I just setup GPL on a
friends system and had SEVERE texture problems on his Voodoo3000 until I forced
the driver to limit to 2mb textures.   Anyway - here is my OpenGL options for
the card and their current settings - if anyone has any ideas - let me know.

Enable Buffer Region Extension (unchecked)
Use fast linear-mipmap-linear filtering (unchecked)
Enable anisotropic filtering (unchecked)

Default color depth for textures (use desktop color depth)
I've tried forcing to 16 and 32 - no go
Buffer flipping mode (Auto Select)
Other options are: Block Transfer or Page Flip
Enable alternate depth buffering  techniques (unchecked)
Wait for VSYNC (unchecked)
this used to be checked but I unchecked it for better
                performance in Quake 3
Optimization method (Blend)
Other options: Best Image or Best Performance

Currently using the latest Creative Drivers

Display Driver :        3dbgfw9x.drv(v4.12.01.2204.02.0353)
Device Driver : nvmini.vxd(v4.12.01.0353)

I've tried nVidia Reference drivers 3.68 and it didn't help GPL and it really
HURT all my other games.  So far the CLabs drivers are the best performing
drivers.

System Specs (if it matters)

P3-700
384mb RAM
32gb hard drive
SBLive X-Gamer running the new 11/99 drivers
GPL 1.2 with OpenGLbeta2 Patch (from The Pits)

All GPL ini files are totally unmodified.

Help is appreciated!

Are you using the GPL 1.2 patch?  This cured the Voodoo3 texture corruption
problem for me.

In car. Detail at half. I can set detaill full and still get 36 if I am
racing alone (i actually had it at 1280x1024 and it ran 36 but with other
racers is went down to around 18) but not with other racers. I'm not sure
what the detail slider does actually. Is it textures? or more polygons or
both?

Did you ever have a 3dfx card on this system (i.e. did you swap hardrives or
use ghost etc.). If you used to have a 3dfx card you might try cleaning up
the registry (delete any 3dfx entries--if you don't know how icq me or post
on the group icq:11986572). I assume the game runs in software mode. You
might also change your AGP aperature in the bios to 1/2 your physical memory
(probalby shouldn't matter).  What resolution are you trying to run at.
Also, make sure your last renderer is set to rastOGL.dll in the app.ini file
and make sure your rastOGL.dll file in the gpl directory is not screwed up
(i.e. replace it). It seems weird it won't run on your system since it is
very standard. What kind of motherboard do you have? Also, set vidcard OGL
to block transfer mode (as opposed to autoselect).

Please post your entire setup like mobo, etc for easier troubleshooting.

I have a GeForce256 on nVidia's 3.62 ref drivers running GPL beautifully
on my Intel PIII450.

I had severe problems with locking up in D3D games on a mobo with the
VIA133 chipset, and so I bought the MSI BXMaster mobo with the Intel BX
chipset. Everything runs great now. My lesson learnt here is to get
everything Intel if you want full compatibility.

Do you have problems running D3D games?

Hope this helps.

Sunny

It's a Gateway computer so I'm sure it has INTEL mobo.  All of my
other games work great in D3D and OpenGL mode.  I use OpenGL for
Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 and it works great.  I can only assume
that since the OpenGL is still BETA for GPL that it is not fully
compliant.  I don't know why they just can't to a D3D patch for GPL
and end all the suffering.  I know I'm not the only one who can't play
this game.

works fine here.  36 fps in practice at 1600x1200 with mirrors = every 6
using beta2 and 3.68 drivers.

Have you tried agp 1x transfer mode (get agpwiz) or setting agp aperature to
16?
I have issues with my lx mb if my setting is not 1x.  I also needed a 'power
wire' fix.

Could just be this is the game that is activating an incompatibility.

Try Block transfer.

See if you can get your hands on the 3.53 drivers.
