Modem Trouble with N2

by Mark » Tue, 04 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Hi,
About 2 months ago, I installed my modem on com 2. That day I check my
modem to see if it worked it did. Today I tried to initialize my modem with
a friend, it didn't work. I got an error message "Could not initialize
modem." Whats wronge? I have a US-Robitic 33.6 Voice Modem, set on com2,
irq3. The game is set with the 28.8 modem USR string with com2 irq3 (game
settings). It does not work. I have a Pentuim 166, 64mb of edo ram, running
under win95 version nascar2, and N2 install on full. Any clues on my
problem?

When you started the game(this time), did you do an F8 boot-up?  If your
modem has the jumpers off, then plug-and play is setting the com/irq.
In this case an F8 boot-up won't work.  Try booting into WIN95, and then
going down to DOS.  If that works then thats the problem.  You can
resolve it permanantly by installing the jumpers.  If thats not the
problem, I don't have any other ideas...Sorry.  I have the same modem
though and it works fine.

Modem Trouble with N2

 Hi all,
I responded to Mark with e-mail, thought better of it and decided to post
a public response in regards to the "initialize" problem when using a modem
in Nascar2.
I had loaded Chris Fredericks' excellent car set into my computer. The
installation took my default car sets and placed them in another directory
and left itself as the sole carset. Upon trying to join a race on Kali
I received a "failure to initialize ipx card" error. I tried different
modem strings, reinstalled Kali and Kahn and checked all of the different
configurations I could think of. Then it occured to me that the last thing
I had done before logging on to Kali was to load CFs' car set. I reinstalled
the default carset and the problem was solved.
It seems N2 has to have the "multi" set in order to play online, modem
to modem or through Kali, Kahn. Fortunately, Chris' set has an easy
install/ uninstall program .
The fact that you a "failure to initialize" error when the problem is
a missing carset is a bit misleading. But then, Papy isn't under any
compunction to accomodate others' carsets, I suppose. I wonder under
what other conditions one would get that message.
Anyhow, If this is old news then I apologize for the wasted B/width.
Hope this helps someone.
Regards,
Greg

If you have Chris Fredericks car set installed then run UNLOADCF.BAT and
reset your entry list to "MULTI".  That fixed my system which had the
same problem.

Mark, I had this problem recently too.<g>  **My** problem was that I was =
using a '97 car set which moved the original cars out of the "cars" =
directory, to make room for the '97 cars.  Well.... the '97 car set =
didn't have a "multi" car group which caused the "cannot initialize =
modem" error.  When I re-loaded the original cars, everything worked =
fine.  I don't know if this may be your situation, but I thought that it =
was worth passing along...  BTW, I also have a USR 33.6 modem which is =
set to the same IRQ and DMA as yours.

Hey,
My friend has a US robotics 33.6 modem on com 2 irq3, and he has NOT
installed that other car set, and his multi.lst file is there etc.,
but he still can't get the modem to work.  It just won't intitialize
it.  The modem works with our other games so.... any suggestions?

thanks,
brian lohiser
