when i try to connect with a friend we connect for about 5 seconds and
then it says connection failed- any thoughts?

You probably have invalid init string (or your partner has).
Try AT&F^M~~~AT&K0&Q6S37=11^M

That solved our problem ... Latency around .07 - .10
