I use a MS Sidewinder Force Feedback wheel, game port version. It works ok
in Windows games. It also works in DOS games, but since DX8 (I believe) the
resolution of the wheel and pedals in GP2 is very low. I get only 50
different values on any axis and can actually see the calibration dot make
small jumps.

Now I would like to know:
- what is your experience with other wheels in DOS games that run under
Windows / DirectX
- does anyone know a way to increase the controller resolution in DOS games
to something similar to what I get in Windows games. For example 1000 values
on the steering axis and 64 on the pedals in GPL Direct X mode

I have tried to run GP2 with the pc in DOS mode, but that did not work, the
wheel gives no input at all.

Can't specifically answer any of your questions, Bart, but I can tell you
this -- DirectX 8.0 was a bit buggy and MS has since made available DirectX
8.0a.  Installing this update fixed a number of controller problems I was
having.  Don't remember exact url, but root around on MS's web site for
"downloads" and you'll run across it.

Thanks Don :)
I have installed DX8a now, but still get the same small range for the wheel
in GP2. Well it's driveable and lfrs is probably in its last GP2 season
anyway...
At least what dx8 did was make the calibration of the wheel very stable.
