Calibration problems with Nascar Pro Wheel

by R Joya » Mon, 06 Oct 1997 04:00:00

When I set the switch on the pedal base to combined, Win95 says that the
unit is unplugged. I have Monster Truck Madness and according to the setup
sheet these are the settings for the pedal base. So far I have tried
numerous ways so I could get my wheel to calibrate in Win95 but the only
way Win95 will recognize it is when the switch is set to seperate. But then
MTM will not calibrate correctly with it set like that. If any of you other
Nascar Pro owners have had the same problem and resolved it please let me
know. Thanks.

I am having a similar problem. It seems the dos, games N1 and N2 want the
pedals on a different different joystick than the wheel. The soda demo
wants them on the same joystick. If I install the converter that came with
my older T1, if makes it so games in win95 like soda can put the wheel and
pedals on the same joystick and it will work and calibrate in win95. To run
N1 or N2 i have to take the converter off, but I don't calibrate in win95
and it doesn't seem to affect the controls. I'm assuming it's because these
games use DOS. If anyone has more input on this please let me know.

I have the Nascar Pro Wheel, and had similar problems with Win 95 not
recognizing the combined setup. I now have it working in Indycar 2, and
Nascar 2 as combined, and works in MTM, Pod, Need For Speed 2, etc. in Win
95. Here is what I did step by step. I cannot guarantee this will work for
you, but it did for me. If you already have Direct X 5.0 installed, ignore
step #1.

1) Install Direct X 5.0 core(dx5core.exe) from
http://www.microsoft.com/DIRECTX/RESOURCES/downloads/dx5core.exe

2) Go Start, Settings, Control Panel, Game Controllers

3) Remove all game controllers even if it is currently showing Thrustmaster
Nascar Pro, then click on add

4) Select Thrustmaster NASCAR Pro w/combined pedals

5) If not allready installed, Install the Thrustmaster Pro Panel(version
1.0)

6) Run the Propanel program, if the Thrustmaster NASCAR Pro is not
currently shown, goto Device Selection, and select
Thrustmaster NASCAR Pro w/combined pedals.

7) If all goes well, you should now be able to calibrate.

Odd, when the ole T1 adaptor is installed it will re-wire your NASCAR
Pro to the default T1 and earlier T2 setups (Wheel on joystick 1 and
pedals on Joystick 2).  This is not what you want in Win95 games/sims
that require the wheel and pedals on the same joystick.  You can check
this out with the TMS.exe program.

N1, N2, ICR2, GP2 will all work whether the wheel & pedals are on the same
joystick or not.  They don't care.  But, you do need to calibrate the
devices first before you select them for steering, gas, brakes, etc.  If
they are run within windows, I don't think they use the gameport
joystick applet and device controller in Win95.

Most Win95 games/sims will require that you set the pedals to combined,
then use the Pro Panel and select ID 1 as NASCAR Pro w/combined pedals.
If you still have trouble have the NASCAR Pro recongnized, make sure
that your gameport joystick and soundcard are setup properly in Win95.

I got the nascar wheel/pedals recently. In order to get it to work
properly, I have it set on combined. Make sure it is set as device 1. if
you have another joystick installed, try removing it (& the nascar device,
then reinstall - make sure the device is #1).
Eric.

The biggest problem is probably for people who (like me) have a Steering
device and a joystick which you want to use in Win95. You  *MUST* go to
the joystick applet in the Control Panel and manually remove or add as
appropriate. Which ever device you select to use in Win95 *MUST* be
ID number 1 in this applet. Win95 does not know how to use any other
ID. It is great that the DX5 joystick applet has provisions for I think 12
different devices. But in common Micro$oft fashion where everything
is perpetually 80% complete, you can only use the device on ID1.
Kind of frustrating if you don't know about this "feature".
