Nascar 2003 problem returning to main menu after creating player........

I have Nascar Racing 2003 Season. I use OpenGL mode as I did in Nascar 2002
because it performs much better. Everything works great except for one
thing:

I am at the main menu, and then select "Players". I go in and type my name,
add player, pick cars etc...everything seems fine. Then when I hit "Done" to
return to the main menu, the car that is spinning jerks quickly and the
screen freezes. I can't see the main menu but it is there, as I can hear the
mouse moving over the options and I can esc out of the game but all I see is
the players section frozen. The game is still functioning behind the
corrupted/locked up players menu.

It happens only in OpenGL and at all resolutions with or without FSAA and
AF. If I choose Direct3D as the renderer, I do not have this problem. I only
have this problem with the "Player" section of the main menu and it seems to
have something to do with the 3D car model spinning corrupting something
when returning to the main menu. I either have to change the renderer to
Direct3D to setup players/paint job or esc out of the game in OpenGL after I
setup players/paint job and then restart the game. I can go into "Options"
or anything else from the main menu and it returns to the main menu just
fine.

My config is:

MSI K7T Turbo2
AthlonXP 1600+
512MB PC133
Win98SE
Radeon 8500LE 64MB
SB Live! Value
Catalyst 3.0a
DX9

All other games work fine.

From the game's readme file:
"ATI R8000 and R9000 series
Catalyst 3.0 or earlier drivers have both DirectX and OpenGL issues, but
the current beta driver has fixed all known DirectX issues and most of the
OpenGL issues.  The next official Catalyst driver release should resolve the
remaining OpenGL issues.  Additionally on 8500 cards the backfire effect may
appear to come from the center of the 3D car model instead of the driver's
side exhaust pipes."

I personnally have BIG FPS reduction in OpenGL with the solar effects set
on. It goes from 60 fps to 8-9 fps in certain corners (going in T1 at Lowes
night for example) and only in opengl. In D3D, the fps drop is from 5-10
fps.

P4 2.26

Geforce 4 Ti4400 128 ram; Det 41.09

SB Audigy
FSAA : Quincux
