Official NASCAR 2003 demo installation problem

Official NASCAR 2003 demo installation problem

I uninstalled my leaked demo in favor of the official one; however, I can't
even get it to install.  I get a "an installation support file could not be
installed" message, and it aborts.  I've got DirectX 9.0 installed.  Anyone
have a clue why I'm seeing this?  I've downloaded the file twice from
different sources (Sierra and 3D Gamers) and get the same results with both
downloads.

Thanks!

Did you remove the old folder the earlier beta was installed in?

Randall,

I had not deleted the folder, so I went back and did that.  This time the
installation process went much further before I got the "an installation
support file could not be installed" message.  The Papyrus NASCAR logo had
actually come up in the background.  Maybe I need to use my Registry edit
tool to get rid of any remnants of the original demo.  Thanks for the
suggestion!

Clear out your TEMP folders.

In Windows 9x, there is one of them:

c:\windows\temp.

In Windows 2000 there are TWO of them (and almost everyone misses the second
one, which is the most important):

c:\winnt\temp (System Temp Directory)
c:\documents & settings\<user profile name>\local settings\temp (User Temp
Directory)

In Windows XP there are TWO of them (and again, everyone misses the second
one, which is the most important):

c:\windows\temp (System Temp Directory)
c:\documents & settings\<user profile name>\local settings\temp (User Temp
Directory)

In Win2K and XP, be advised that the Local Settings directory is a HIDDEN
directory and you must have the show hidden files/folders option enabled to
get there.

The User Temp Directory in Win2K and XP (or the Temp Directory in Win9x) is
where most installers dump their files when preparring to install software.
Most installers to this day do NOT clean up after themselves after the
installation is complete.  You would be amazed at how many hundreds of
megabytes of junk there are in these folders.

Make sure you start off with a fresh restart before clearing the above temp
folders.  This will ensure that any file lock handles are cleared from temp
files used by some programs that may have been run during the current boot
cycle.

Thanks a bunch Larry!  I would never have thought of that... off to try it
now.  Be back later with a report.

Official NASCAR 2003 demo installation problem

by John Cauthe » Sun, 09 Feb 2003 03:10:25

Larry,

I'm running Windows 98SE.  I did as you suggested and cleared out my
windows/temp folder.  I then restarted the computer.  I got the same "an
installation support file could not be installed" message.  I've even
reinstalled DirectX 9.0 to see if that was the cause... no luck.  As a last
resort, I tried installling it in safe mode... same result.

I give up on the demo.  I want to buy the game, but now I'm a bit worried
that this will carry over into it.  I'm really puzzled by this problem.

Thanks,

John

Hmmm....

Any chance it's a bad download?  That's one big download!

I've downloaded it twice from Sierra and once from 3D Gamer... same problem
each time.  I've got a post on the official Sierra.com message board post
about the demo.  Hopefully someone at Papyrs who has a clue about what might
be going on will respond there.

I've thought about downloading the leaked version and installing it again
just to see what happens.  Maybe another uninstall of it would clear the
way?

Eric,

Couldn't find anything there that pertained to what I'm looking at, other
than a suggestion that antivirus software be shutdown.  I tried that but it
made no difference.

Thanks for the tip though!

Have you ever updated the installer program for window9x?  I think it
was about the same time the LWFF was released, MS put out a new installer
program.  A few of the LWFF files wouldn't install without first updating.
It is just a shot in the dark, but you could try visiting the msupdate page
to see if you have the old installer.

Good idea Dave... I checked on this and realized that I had done so back in
2000 when I bought my LWFF.  I was one of those who had the install problem.
Just for good measure, I downloaded and reinstalled the "2000" vintage
installer from Microsoft's site.... still get the same error when trying to
install the demo.

Thanks!
