N2003 GFX card update...?

by Jon » Mon, 18 Aug 2003 08:49:29

Hi, keep it brief:

just bought n2003 finally, in uk, through the 'game' website.. 12.50 pounds
delivered.. a bargain considering what can be done via these mods i'm
reading about.

system: was hot for when n4 came out, now isn't so hot.. thinking about a
quick fix by getting a new gfx card

1.4ghz Ath
512mb ddr 2100
geforce2 64mb

urm? u get the picture.. i think this system could take an athlon up to
2ghz? and i'm presuming getting a better agp card would help things out as
this system is still pretty much kick-ass for everything else i do. loads of
people had this kind of base system in late 01 early 02.. so what's my best
move to get n2003 running good with about 60-75% of the eye candy say?

many many thanks!

Geforce 4 Ti4200 might be a quick cheap option.  (About 80)  The 1.4GHz CPU
might not like large fields either though....

Geforce 4 Ti first of all, you should be able to pick up a 4200 for under
100 and that should give you the kind of performance you're after.

This depends on the motherboard model and BIOS.  Take a look at the
AMD motherboard forums  http://www.amdforums.com/ and you should be
able to find out all you need to know.  I'd go ahead and get the
absolute fastest CPU you can fit on the board, since this seems to
determine the basic framerate of this particular series of games
moreso than the vid card.  Or if you are inclined and your board will
support it, you can generally overclock the 1700+ cards to much higher
speeds.  Be aware that oc'ing usually requires money to be spent on
fans, heatsinks, etc. so you may not come out ahead on price.

I went from a 1.4 to a 2400+ with a GF3 and it made a very noticeable
difference, I am sure much more than if I had spent equivalent money
on a video upgrade.  That said, your GF2 is very long in the tooth...
so it is hard to say.  You really need to do both.  I would make sure
the CPU is taken care of first, then spend your remaining budget on
the gfx card.

Good luck,
Gerald
