MSFF Wheel Problem

by BRH » Tue, 02 Oct 2001 00:04:39

My nephew has the MSFF USB wheel running under Windows 98SE, and can't
get it to work right.  He says that the wheel acts like a digital
controller -- that is, no matter how little he moves the wheel, the
wheel calibration indicates it to be either fully left, centered, or
fully right -- nothing in between.  In other words, it's acting like a
digital controller, rather than analog.

This wheel worked fine on his old computer, but it's experiencing these
problem with his new computer.

Is there some setting that he needs to activate, or is there a patch or
updated driver to download?  Any thoughts on what might be wrong would
be appreciated.

Can you expand a little..?

System it is running with...

Has he done Controller Calibration TO THE LETTER..?
That is one of the most common errors ever...pressing and turning when all
it asks for on screen is press one button etc etc

Then when he has that done exactly....is he then following exactly the
requests within the chosen game..?

I have same wheel and for a living i upgrade and fix PC's,but seem to spend
more time putting right peoples problems,MOST are self inflicted and wheel
trouble is a usual complaint..rarely a problem if all is done correctly and
in the right order.

Can't give you anymore details than that, as he lives in NY and I'm in ***ia,
but he called me back saying that he got it straightened out by downloading
another driver.

Thanks for your help.....

That's scary.  MS hasn't released any SideWinder 4.x driver updates that can
be downloaded, unless he's talking about the small v4.5 update (don't know
anyone that really knows what it does) from Windows Update.  That's for
Win2K/XP only as far as I know...

Unless I missed one somewhere :)

MSFF Wheel Problem

Any idea how one can get this 4.5 update? I'm using a MSFF USB wheel with
WinXP and would be very interested in obtaining this update. I tried going
to the Windows Update site, but no such patch was available.

Thanks,

Michael M
